What is this connector?

I need one of these connectors and the male equivalent but cant find them anywhere. Does anyone know what they are called and where to get them?

I've looked through the sites of major electronic retailers with no luck.

Googling "20 pin ribbon cable" brings up a fair few results. Is it on none of the result sites?

Nope. I can only seem to find connectors with dual rails.

Where did it come from?
It looks like something out of a cd rom drive or laptop, probably a proprietry connector used by one manufacturer so finding anything else compatable with it might be difficult.

Came from a laptop as you guessed, its the connection from the motherboard to the LCD.

Almost certainly a proprietry connecter then i'm afraid. You can either buy an old laptop of the same make or model and salvage one or do a diy job on it. Ought to be easy enough to use an old parallel connector or something and just poke the pins into the holes on that connector. Then glue it in to prevent it coming out or shorting.
