What is this "encoding" people speak of?

Generally as justification for quad cores which are otherwise not needed. I see the phrase often but don't actually know what it refers to. My best guess is changing video or audio from one format to another, e.g. flac to mp3.

Is this right? If so I admit I'm confused by why this is a justification. I've ripped a fair few of my dvds, and the process has been dvd decryptor to get the data onto a hard drive, which I think was limited by the speed of the optical drive and not the processor. Followed by gordian knot / auto gk which is definitely processor limited and my best guess at "encoding".

However whenever I've done this I've lined up a dozen or so films in a queue, set it running then gone to sleep. I imagine most people do this, so the processor speed doesn't matter. So, what is the "encoding" which means people buy quad cores?

You got it. ;) Quads are good for many things aswell as encoding like photoshop/graphics modeling (cad) things like that.

its when my wife brings me her camcorder and 2 memory cards.
4gb internal memory 2x 8gb memory cards of raw uncompressed video and wants me to make her 2-3 DVD's.
was a good excuse to get an i7 comp though :D

Thats when the i7 show's it's worth then.. ;)

Yeh thats when quads come into there own especially if they have hyperthreading too, but ofcourse means nothing if the software dos'nt take advantage.

So the key is to match cpu to decent software.

sorry for the thread hijack ;)

does anyone have any recommendations for decent video converter software?? im a bit of a noob at it still and havent managed to get ati's rubbish avivo working at all, im looking to convert some on my avi/mpeg4/3gp files to dvd :)

/mini rant
One thing that bugs me is that CPU reviews and some forums always make recommendations for gaming, encoding or running PCMark. Don't people do other stuff with their machines?! Programmers need more cores too yet finding code compilation benchmarks are rare!

When I've asked before people have always recommended Super. And that works well.

the thing i notice the difference most on my i7 system over my others is when you take a HUGE avi file from a camera, edit it, then encode, as this is very processor intense. not sure the cpu does too much when just doing simple rips from dvd as when i have done this my cpu goes to 15-20% at most.

but we all love having the best!! :-)
Agree with this as well, i do a bit of encoding (not on a daily basis) I went for i7 because of the better multi gpu support, didnt actually work out too bad cost wise after i sold off my old kit. Also fancied trying out the latest top end kit. Sure, there are many things we dont need, ie 200mph + supercars, but theyre nice to own.:D

Converting downloaded divx or xvid files to mpeg to burn and play in a conventional dvd player is a common thing for quad users with a program called convertxtodvd or winavi etc.

I don't understand why people don't just buy a £20 xvid/mkv player or buy an old xbox with XBMC. Far far cheaper than an i7 setup...

so an xbox will take the video off my camcorder, allow me to edit it and then burn it to a dvd in a lot quicker time than a dual core cpu? wow they have really improved in the last few hours since i last turned mine on
