It's an adaptor so you can put your nano is a standard dock.

They're shipping them with all of their Ipods now. I got one with my Ipod Video.
Basically the manufactures who make Ipod acceseories got fed up with the number of different models of Ipod that Apple just said "ok, make it all to this size" and threw that plastic thing at them.
