Has anyone got an idea what this "smudge" is on the top left of this TV? To me it doesn't look like image burn. My father (whos tv this is) has had image burn before, but using the white screen trick has been able to remove it. But nothing can remove this. No image has been onscreen that could have made a burn like this.

Cheers guys.

Thanks for the replies.

My father got a technician out and hes insistant that its image burn, which coincidentally isn't covered on the extended warranty he took out when he bought it. Hes been pestering them about it the last few days now, they won't send another technician out even though they've said over the phone it doesn't sound like image burn and seems to be a fault with the screen (which would be covered).

I'm almost certain its not image burn.

It's not on a wall mount is it?

I have almost the same problem but I'm convinced I've done it myself my yanking the screen to swivel it on the mount and have ended up splitting the internal layers or similar.

Unless you have been using the TV on its side (portrait orintation) with a view of mountains, then very doubtful its image burn.

wth that looks aweful and how can lcds get image burn? lol thought that was just plasmas?? any techy correct me if im wrong.....

LCD's can suffer from image persistence which is the equivilent of Plasma image burn but it should diseappear after turning off the display for a hour or so. My 4 year old 17" LCD display suffered from it at the top of the screen, only visible on a white or light background though. I doubt it is image persistence though because you need to display a static image for a very long time, in my case it was the Windows title bars that used persist.

So from the replies so far it doesn't seem to be a case of image burn. :p

Pass on that, I know very little about LCD's. I thought the same but the technician that checked the TV wrote on the report that its image burn, and as image burn isn't covered on the extended warranty - which covers accidental damage - they won't fix/replace it and are refusing to send another technician out.

Same with this TV, image persistance can be a problem, but displaying a fully white image removes it after awhile, in my fathers case the WoW toolbars (hes an addict :o ). Plus nothing has been onscreen that could make an imprint like this and its blatantly obvious whatever is onscreen, wether its the PC or watching TV.

There's no way thats image burn, but how are you supposed to prove that if they wont send another tech. I would complain bitterly.

There clearly is a problem with the TV (my guess would be the layers of the LCD are coming apart and dirt and/or condensation have got inside. I suppose it could be a problem with the backlight too, they are often cold cathodes, wrapped around the edge of the screen, although newer sets can use other forms of backlighting (IE LED etc) if its no longer an even light source I could possibly imagine that image.

If they just wont play ball, you could accidently toss a Wii remote at it, as your covered by accidental damage. While I wouldnt normally condone such behaviour, the warrenty/insurance trying to get out of what looks like a legitimate claim is out of order, so play them at their own game.

Its true that LCD's can gain a "memory effect" which causes them to get similar problems to a burned plasma... but a burn normally be a recogniseable shape/item, for example a channel logo/dogs etc, or a tape/banner like on the bottom of sky news.

Yeah thats the process we're going through now, they don't seem to be having any of it tho.

I think you will have to pay a local repair man to come out and do a report on it then claim that back from the extended warranty company.

Thats a pretty good idea, if complaining and whining to them doesn't work we'll probably do that, cheers. ;)

This is sound advice - then send a copy with a letter of complaint to the company's head office.

Speaking with an engineer friend recently he mentioned something very similar.

He advised that the glue or substance used between the screen and protective layer to fix the two together, can denature and turn a light grey/brown in colour - which seems to be exactly what's displayed in that pic!

Thanks man, thats very helpful!

We're most likely going to do exactly that if this first letter doesn't work. ;)
