What is this? Some kind of tv aerial or cable?

Just went outside to have a look around. Turns out there is a satellite dish on my building. It doesnt look too old because the shape is oval and its not huge. I followed the cable down from the dish and at the bottom of the building it goes into a metal box in the external wall with "rediffusion" written on it. Looks like I could be able to get into it to have a look....

an update to follow :)

You could possibly link two of the cables onto the LNB of the dish, face it to 13 deg East (Hotbird), buy yourself a Dreambox or some other satellite receiver and with the right card pull in some films, footie and porn. I'm watching Birmingham v Tottenham on Arabic channel ART right now.

We've got an old Diamond Cable socket that I plugged an aerial cable in and low and behold we can get freeview with our new Digital TV, which is a bonus on top of having SKY+ I guesss. :D

Looking round my flat for a tv aerial socket I cannot find one. So if I ever want to watch tv I have to use a portable aerial which is no fun at all.

However I did find this:

but what is it? Never seen one of these before. Its old by the looks of it but what does it do? The only thing I can think of is that it maybe used to be a box for cable tv? Is there any way I can use this to get a signal?

Well at least it's in keeping with the woodchip wallpaper and grimy silk emulsion paint finish! :D
