its a bolt thread fixing for wood.
that fixing would be inserted into a hole in a piece of would say a table top. Then the table leg would have a bolt fitted in the end which would screw into that fixing hence attaching the table leg to the table top.

Just to clear this up a bit...

The fixing was found in a desk drawer* and 3 of us didn't know what it was so I thought I would bung it on here and see if you guys knew. Lets face it there have been worse threads in the past on GD but that's why its called 'General Discussion'

Some of the replies have raised a laugh, so thanks for that And thank you for explaining what it actually is seeing that three 20 something computer geeks didnt know
