I thought I'd try to utilise the general knowledge on the forum because I'm stumped.

I had to remove the side from my bath to look for a leak for the first time and found those two things. They are quite heavy, metal and appear to have been connected to the mains. My google fu has completely failed me and I can't for the life of me figure out what they are?

Any thought?

Many thanks.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is stumped :)

Edit: And yes - I'll be digging out the mains tester to check before I disconnect them today. In general, I don't know who wired up this house before we got it but I'm not entirely sure it was an electrician.

I'd say they're probably speakers and the silver-ish wire is probably actually speaker cable.
This sort of thing was fashionable once.....

The white junction box and black wire are unrelated mains.

There's nothing actually wrong with this under a bath- if properly constructed it should be totally dry there, but its shoddy.

Ah, okay I hadn't considered that. I'll take them apart later then to see. Thanks.

What's on the end of the wires that disappear out the top of the photo?

Presumably the black wire is the incoming supply so whatever it's driving would be on the end of those other wires

Do they disappear under the floorboards? Might be driving kitchen lights or something if you have spotlights or something in the room below the bathroom?

They disappear under the wooden floor, maybe tucked out the way when they where no longer required although I've just realised there's a medicine cabinet in the bathroom with a light so maybe that. But the one I took apart didn't seem to be powered in any way.

Actually I'm not sure what to do with them now. Maybe I'll just tuck them further back out the way.

If the incoming for them comes from that junction box I personally would be disconnecting them there and removing them if they're not needed, no need to keep stuff that could cause problems down the line connected if they're redundant.

I'd agree that tucking back out of the way is a recipie for trouble.

Some further thoughts based upon the new image:
There's a label on the inside of the thing which will tell you for sure, or at least will give a model number which you can probably stuff into google- This is just visible inside the lid on the left of the new picture.
I think there's also one on the bottom thingy, on the base near the earth wire.
:)

Assuming it's a transformer, are (were at some point) there any downlights in the room directly below?

Don't assume bath lights immediately.
