What is this?

I'd agree that tucking back out of the way is a recipie for trouble.

Some further thoughts based upon the new image:
There's a label on the inside of the thing which will tell you for sure, or at least will give a model number which you can probably stuff into google- This is just visible inside the lid on the left of the new picture.
I think there's also one on the bottom thingy, on the base near the earth wire.
:)

Assuming it's a transformer, are (were at some point) there any downlights in the room directly below?

Don't assume bath lights immediately.

Absolutely spot on! And I didn't even notice. Much appreciated!

The kitchen below the bathroom - the wires coming out are the same as the ones upstairs.

and be extraordinarily careful that there's not a live wire in amongst it somewhere!

Well the lights in the kitchen still work so I'm slightly concerned my live wire detector off Ali Express might not quite be up to the job.

I think I'll leave well alone for now - I certainly don't like where they are but I'll have to think about it.

Many thanks all!

They are toroidal transformers, the open one in the photo has two output windings wired in parallel for higher current output.

Given the lamp type its probably rated at approx 12V AC not DC as suggested above, DC would require a bridge rectifier as a minimum connected to the transformer output.

"I'm not a sparky"
But under the bath would fall under Zone 1 so only low voltage allowed not the 240 supply to the transformers.

So probably not to code and probably a DIY job, its probably been there for years though but not a good place for them if you ever have a leak.

RE your tester I can only see a single twin and earth cable going into the terminal junction and the two black cables then running to the transformers but it might be the angle you took the photo at.

If there is indeed only one feed cable then it would only be live under the bath when the kitchen lights were turned on but there could be other wires I can't see, treat them all as live unless isolated.

Pick some new kitchen lights you like and get a sparky to fit them and remove the dodgy install from under the bath.

Under the bath is not zone 1- Thats a common misconception.

Assuming it's sealed and inacessable without tools, it is *not* in any zone.

It's absolutely fine, if shoddy.
As I said I'm not a sparky I was just going by NICEIC website and it didn't say the area under the bath (zone 0) was excluded.

Semantics but OP took the side off the bath so from your own link it then becomes zone 1 until he screws the side back on and those fittings aren't IPX4.

"The space under a bath is zone 1, but if the space is fully enclosed and cannot be accessed without the use of a tool, it is outside the zones."

Children splashing water everywhere, something leaking only thing between them and a live 240v connection is a piece of ply...

Code or not I wouldn't want them under a bath in my house and I doubt its in the manufactures installation instructions. I would either wall mount them near the tracks or replace the fittings with something else.
