what is your current relationship with technology ?

a motion sensor for lights n the kitchen or bathroom might work for me but if I'm sitting motionless in the living room I don't want to have to start waving my arms around like Kermit the frog to switch the light back on

Motion detectors are battery powered. If they fail I can control the lights via the Home app or simply change a AA battery :p

Use less energy because my automation scripts check for motion and will turn off a light when there’s been no motion for x time. Unlike before where the wife would leave the hallway lights on after going to work.

I’ve also got scripts that don’t check for motion if certain events are met. For instance, if the PC (connected to a smart plug) is on, the office light doesn’t come on as I don’t typically want the light coming on every time my hand moves the mouse.

There’s ways around most of the fears people have in this thread tbh.

I work in IT and use a computer all day every day while doing so. I have a product from almost every Apple line and love the integration it brings

I has cycle computers, Zwift and a turbo trainer on my road bike with heart rate and cadence monitors that work via Bluetooth

I have some basic home automation set up but nothing like what’s been mentioned earlier in this thread

Basically technology is practically unavoidable these days

That said I do like to switch off from it on evenings and weekends somewhat and I dislike social media and the obsessions it causes

I am quite happy to turn on a light switch for the main lights however for the other little lights I have dottered around the house google assistant is great. My nest is great, my phone is great for maps, music and Messaging.

Could I live without a smart light switch or a heating system that saves me money sure. Phone not any more its to useful.

There does appear to be a general trend about social media in this thread, and a general dislike for it. I would personally agree with this.

I think everything sometimes merges as under the banner of technology. I guess in it's rawest sense, technology for me is the hardware, be it a PC, Tablet, Smart Bulb etc. What you do with it, use it for, (including social media) is ultimately the individuals personal choice, depending on if you choose to engage with and use the technology itself.

I use technology, but I try to choose how and what I use it for, and how it engages with me. In the end it is to enable and facilitate, not frustrate and annoy. We all do the same I am sure, to a point that works for us as individuals.

Being signed out of apps due to an upgrade is really frustrating, especially on a TV!
Whilst I agree about getting signed out being annoying, with TVs you kind of have to compare it to the old days, I mean in the old days TVs had no apps or internet connection anyway, so it was the equivalent of being permanently signed out with no way to sign in.

On a similar vein, it can be annoying when I sit down to play a console game with my son, and the console demands an update, the game demands an update etc. Kind of feels like you have to know in advance when you want to paly something and boot it up to do updates an hour or two before.

I do admire the irony though with people claiming they hate social media, but are happy to frequent these forums - which are some of the oldest types of social media.

People say whatapp is social media. I dont understand how as its another messaging service like SMS but better.

Maybe I'm missing something here but why do you need to be signed in anyway? The only reason my TV is 'net connected is because of catchup TV which I'll admit is nice but otherwise I couldn't care less whether I'm signed into anything. They only want my (real) contact details (which they're not getting) to spam me with crap target me for adverts promos etc

Actually you did say that:
"My house doesn’t even have any light switches… they’re all motion activated"

That was a quote from @EVH if you look at post 26. My response to him was that i'm pretty much in the same boat, all my lights are controlled by schedule or motion. I do still have light switches to over-ride any control if needed, but they're rarely used.

I'm guessing he means for catchup services such as ITV hub / 4oD / My5, as these are free to use and you don't actually need to be signed in to use them, but an account does allow you to track progress of what you've watched - which is mainly why i sign into them.

You have to be signed in for some services like Amazon Prime, Netflix etc. But my point is that in the old days such things didn't exist so the 'hassle' of having to sign in is no worse than the old days where no matter what you did you couldn't stream things off the internet even if you spent a whole year trying instead of the 1min or whatever it takes these days.

In other words the 'annoyances' of today are more like things being only 99% better instead of 100% better than they used to be.
