As in the title - looking for some new additions to my ever increasing "to play when I get time" list. What was your favourite game of all time, and why?

I'll start:

Fable: The Lost Chapters.
The story was immersive, and it had undescribable charm and character. The graphics are a little dated, but I'm on my 5th run through and still loving every second of it - from the quests to hunting down badass armour sets and playing mini-games. An awesome game, and i'm excited for the upcoming hd remake.

Your turn!

Deuteros and Dragons Breath, two games that have never been bested in terms of nostalgic quality ;) I ruined many summer days with these games :p

Hmm. Imma go with Portal as it was really immersive and atmospheric. Creeped me right out. But was compelling and the puzzles were never insurmountable.

Honourable mention to Botanicula though.....

FF7 for me great story and really long.

I'd probably find it crap if I replayed it though.

after ff8 I moved to pc and never got to play any of the others :(

Overall, I guess mine is S.T.A.L.K.E.R : Call of Pripyat. The mods that breathe life into this ageing title are constantly growing, and make it really worth playing again and again due to the replay value they offer. I've yet to find a game that delivers as spellbinding an atmosphere / immersive game play as this does.

Without mods, though, it might be quite different.

Planetside 1 for me. Nothing like it at the time.

Once you got to know your way around the game & joined an outfit, or played with a squad of friends, it was immense. So many different ways to have fun in it.

Thief: Deadly Shadows (2004)

There's not many games out there that ever made me wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

The atmosphere was like nothing else up to this point in time and for some like me, nothing since. I spent many hours or more likely many days cowering in dark and dank corners attempting to find some courage just to sneak forward a few yards to another dark hiding place all the while in dread fear of being seen or heard by anything or anyone.

The atmosphere of the Shalebridge Cradle level has rightly gone down in gaming history I feel, but it offered much more than just good immersive game play for me as I clearly recall feeling that it was me in the game, not Garratt during it.

To say I was fairly scared throughout the game would be a lie. I was utterly petrified through every single second of it.

World of Warcraft. I played from the beta right through to raiding in Naxx. I still dabble from time to time to keep my level up to max. No other game has consumed my life for so many years!

Deus Ex because...

Compelling storyline with plenty of plot twists
Cool soundtrack that adapted to gameplay.....omg that first time you walk into UNATCO
Many ways to complete levels therefore high re-playability value
Variety of augmentations
Combines my favourite genres of 1st person shooter and RPG into a game that's so good it's the only game I've played more than once and completed. (3 times)

Vampire Bloodlines is a close second and I will be replaying it soon. Whether it will hold my interest to the very end like Deus Ex does remains to be seen.

Skyrim. Beautiful vast open world for you to explore at your leasure and a modding community every other other game should aspire to have.

In my case it's the old Amiga/AtariST/PC game called Captive.

It's an old first-person sci-fi dungeon crawler, obviously inspired by Dungeon Master (which I never liked). The immense number of levels is procedurally generated without these levels becoming samey. Quite a feat!

The difficulty level is just perfectly balanced and becomes increasingly more challenging and more fun.

The genre itself is not forgotten, as the game mechancs are very similar to the recent Legend of Grimrock (which I'm also not overly keen on).

I've been playing Captive on and off since its release in 1990 and I always come back to it. It's one of those games that I start on for a short session and find myself unable to stop. The best version today is on WinUAE (the Amiga emulator).

Thief: The Dark Project - Even though it was old and relatively basic it let you do just what you wanted to do and the atmosphere was perfect. Give me a blackjack and a few moss and water arrows and I was happy as Larry! Thief 2 was very good and built on the priginal but it obviously wasn't as original. I remember playing a demo of a level of Thief 2 but as it was quite a bit before release it was using the Thief 1 engine, it still got replayed a lot!

Thief 3 (as said above) had so much atmosphere too, especially The cradle - one of the best levels ever! Saying that though it didn't quite work as well as an overall experience as the original, still very good though.

I have great trepidation about the 4th. I am obviously getting it (thanks AMD!) but am worried about what I have read but am sure it will still be good.

Final Fantasy 7.

The story, the battle music, the humour, the marathon boss fights, the chocobo racing, the pet breeding.... A lot if its charm is most likely clouded by nostalgia, but no game has yet replaced the 'wow' factor it sparked when I played through it.

So many faves, can't really nail one.. but most recent ones that stand out:

Diablo 3 - Absolutely love this game, everything about it, really looking forward to Reaper Of Souls expansions as well.
Battlefield 3/4 - obvious reasons.
The Last Of Us - fantastic story and constant action and twists.
Metal Gear Solid Series
Forza Series
Counter Strike - I started playing it since 1.2 all the way until CS:GO absolute classics.
