Windows UAC & firewall
Router firewall
MSE
Malware bytes run every now and then
KeePass and different complex passwords for all online accounts (very important account passwords only stored in me noggin)
Daily backups
Electric fence

It is..... hypothetically speaking. No antivirus solutions installed people will still run into problems at some point or another.

People enter sites not knowing if they have issues therefor if there is no AV installed there is trouble. Same with emails/applications/downloads e.t.c.

So yes, it is like driving down a road blindfolded. ;)


/waits for the "I have never had AV installed and never ran into problems" post.

I like to think of it as driving down a road.. in an armoured truck. :p

In my case, anyway.

I prefer to take a proactive approach to security, rather than rely on the reactive nature of AV products.

I'm yet to see evidence of anything getting past the Standard User + SRP combo. Periodic scans, occasionally with multiple vendor rescue CDs, unearth absolutely nothing. If it's not in C:\Program Files or C:\Windows, it's not launching. And the only way programs end up in those two folders is if I manually install them.

Of course, I'm not cocky enough to think that my defences are impenetrable. If anyone has examples of malware that can get past what I have in place, feel free to link to them. I'm always open to new information and I am prepared to re-evaluate decisions where necessary.

I will be getting a new computer which will have no Virus protection or anything on it. I don't really have any money left over with which to buy any products and well I'm a teenager and sometimes I download stuff where if I was sensible I probably wouldn't. :P

What, in your opinion, is the best antivirus set-up that is completely free?

how ridiculous. you're going to kill or seriously injure yourself and/or others in less than 10 seconds. you can't say the risk of getting compromised online is anything like as certain. it could happen but it's not guaranteed.

sticking with the driving theme, it doesn't matter how great a driver you are and how safe your car is. infact you could be sat still not moving and still get maimed just by someone else running into you. your analogy is complete and utter bollards. :)

If there was a recipe for getting malware it would read something like that. Go with one of the free ones - MSE, Avast etc. but to be honest as soon as you launch your warez and click "allow" if it has a nasty payload then chances are you can kiss your antivirus goodbye anyway, as you've just metaphorically handed over the keys to your computer. You could upload smaller files to virustotal but it sounds like most of your downloads would exceed the 20mb limit.

I know it sucks as a teenager not having any money but if you choose to pirate software that's the risk you take.
 
Anti-Virus -
MS Security Essentials

Anti-Malware/Adware/etc -
Monthly runs of SpyBot, MalwareBytes, Trend Online, a couple of others...

Firewall -
Router only while some machines have Windows FW enabled.

Anything else (eg. browser protection like NoScript) -
AdBlock Plus on all.

Never had an infection, the only found items are browser tracking cookies, which everyone has anyway and are low risk.

Simples :p

I'm confused at your reply. your right it doesn't matter how great a driver is you still could get hit.

The same way as malware/antivirus/firewall. They might all be good but there is still that chance the OS could be infected or important files. There for with no security at all you have a more % chance in been hit with something rather than not putting the security there in the first place. So my analogy is fine. Don't you worry.
