What Mac to use for image processing?

Im thinking of buying a Mac soon as all i use at the moment is my laptop with XP on. It does me well but its only a laptop at the end of the day and a Celeron hasnt got the most juice in the world. I had a macmini a year ago (PPC one) and i didnt give it enough time to get used to it before selling it to a mate.

I think and hope that if i give OSX a little time then ill really like it and it will help me to process some photos easier.

What is the ideal setup to use for photo processing ? Do you think an iMac would be decent ? Or go for something without a glossy screen ?
I dont have a budget, but i cannot afford something like a MacPro and massive screens. Maybe something like an iMac 24 basic, or a MacMini + 24" ws.

Id like to know what you lot use please, it would help me decide.
I have a 400D, does anyone here use the canon software on a mac? Does it even work ?

I use a middle spec MacBook Pro, with CS3 for image processing. It works perfecty, and does exactly what I want it to do and extremely quickly too.

Although the screen is a bit limited, I would suggest you went for the MacBook pro (if you need portability) or if you don't, then go for the 24" iMac.

Also, this would have got better replies in the Mac Hardware sub-forum.

So you think the glossy screen will be ok to use ? It wont effect the colours or anything ?

I quite like the look of the standard 24" iMac :D
 
Nope, the glossy screen, if anything, will improve colours. It's supposed to saturate the colours more.

I have a glossy screen on my MacBook Pro and have no problems with it.
 
The glossy screen on my MacBook Pro is excellent, blacks especially are displayed nicely.

If you're not after portability, then one of the iMacs is an obvious choice.
 
For image processing there is no choice. Definetly a mac, the more money you have the better, regardless mac do it best. I only wish i had one.
 
i hate mac's, ever since my mac days at college,
un-reliable, huge, very slow, *industry says its the norm to use it*, and teachers allways praze it,

i hate it, and i think many can vouch for me too.

i prefer pc's, much faster, you can upgrade without problem, easy too do everything, easy to fix, pc's dont crash like mac's for one.

there getting better now apple, but few years ago i hated them, probably the reason i still do. but i still wont work on them.

and for the quote above image processing, i would take my pc over a mac anyday!!!

eh?!?! lol

C2D Macs are as fast as the pc counterparts AND Macs are soooo much more stable than pc's in day to day life.

If the OP has the money then they won;t go wrong with any of the current Macs, the faster the better of course.

Limited flexibility though. I think pound for pound a pc is the way to go. A far greater range of software also and the days of pc's crashing all of the time have long gone. Don't know if you can buy a quad core mac yet either? I stand corrected you can but I would still prefer a pc to a mac anyday. (I'd rather have a swiss-army-knife than a bycicle pump lol)

Yes you can, and you can also buy an 8 core Mac too since the beginning of this year.
 
I find the iMacs the only Mac id go for, and the Mac Mini.

iMac looks nice, all in one & can sit anywhere.

Depends really, for the price of a iMac you can get a VERY good PC, Quad Core, 8800GTX etc, 22" WS.

Its upto you really, depends whether your limited for space or not.

If you're going to get a Mac to keep booting into Windows, may aswell get a PC.
 
PC has a greater range of software.. blah blah. Yes, I can install many things from download.com but are they good, No.

If your into design, video or photography which I assume you are browsing this subforum a mac can support all the best software you would want to use. If it does not, Bootcamp it with windows and install whatever parp on that turd of an opertating system and have the best of both worlds.

PCs are cheaper because the spec is so broad. I'm sorry but Macs are more expensive for a reason. If you want your case and peripherals to be made out of lego and cardboard then go for a pc but a Mac comes with high qaulity aliminium which you have to pay 100s for to match a MacPro case and even then you wouldn't find one.

Regardless of what I say as I know 98% of people here are computer lovers but the OP asked for a MAC for imageprocessing. He has already settled on a brand so he just wants a Mac spec recomendation.

All depends what you prefer.

If it was to do image processing & the odd other thing, id go to the iMac, if you have another PC/Laptop already.
 
Everything on my pc is "aluminium" or finish right down to monitor and acoustic energy speakers. Pc's are no longer cardboard or lego lol. It's up to the OP but I just don't see the justification in buying a Mac over a PC
 
Lets just remember that people also buy a Mac for OS X and it's great work flow for photography. Not just because it looks good.
