What makes us want more POWER?

iirc the cammy was a 1991 3rd gen (245bhp/340lb'ft) 5 speed manual, I spoke to the owner after the guy in the SX had left because he noticed me ogling his car lol

No idea for me. I used to harp on about how my Octavia had more power than I ever needed... then went and got it remapped.

Unless I can go for HUGE power in the future I probably won't bother as 210bhp seems like nothing beyond the norm (yes I know it isn't much by todays standards anyway) and I don't really miss it when I drive our 60bhp Polo for any length of time.

What I want from my next car is handling, preferably of the go kart like type :D

For me its acceleration, i have had some serious powered cars and even then after a while i still want more as you get used to the power pretty quick.

The problem is - Once you get to 300 - you will want MORE ;)
I know, I'm hoping for the sake of my financial situation (and driving licence!) that I manage to resist. 300ish bhp in a 1235kg car should be a lot of fun :D New wheels/tyres, a brake refurb and some handling mods will need to be undertaken before any power upgrades so my bank account is going to take a hammering over the next 6 months!!!

This. Even 320bhp/1250kg in the Rx doesn't feel enough sometimes, but i'm not going to chase more power as it gets expensive. If i did, where would it end? Probably in a hedge :D

imagine what mine is gonna be like with 700bhp/1100kg...636bhp per ton, the veyron has 500bhp per ton, should be quick when it grips in 4th gear haha.

hows your intercooler coming along, im getting my vented bonnet painted in 2 weeks then ill be moving onto the fancy ignition system and push the twinturbos up to 400bhp+

edit: i think flukester wins with 1028bhp per ton.......damm you power ranger!!

It's not really coming along at all atm :(. I'm doing a million other things on it at the same time, and it hasn't moved in 2 years, so it's gonna feel rapid when i get to drive it again.

Don't suppose you have or know anyone within west midlands to lend a Datalogit do you?

I used to crave decent acceleration, but where I am now is plenty for me - not that I get to use it much.

I'm more partial to t0rks these days - in gear acceleration is where its at for a lot of my driving. I believe that is the only reason why I haven't got bored with the 270-280bhp - 440Nm in a petrol rocks.

That said, when I fancy a blast, driving dynamics are far more important to me. Handling and driver feel - hence why my longer term plan is to get something nice, newish and wafty (but reasonably quick still) for a daily/family car and something older but more focussed (182/DC2/RX8 - none of them are particularly quick in a straight line) as a toy.

You should try 185bhp and 180KG :-)

I will take my DAS next summer. If I'm terrified of bikes I think I'd avoid them thereafter! I will get myself some Bikevis LEDs for the front. :)

Where's the fun in that though? Doesn't corner fast, doesn't brake fast and any pot hole / idiot on the road has a strongly magnified ability to kill you!

This is a worry too. I had far too many people pull out on me in the Vx recently.

The more power, the flatter the hills in my case.

That said, with a regular load of say 28tons, you would not notice that great a difference between a 420BHP truck and a 620BHP one, until you find a hill..... :)

Clarkson answered this quite well in a documentary he did (maybe a series, can't quite remember). He talks about how adrenaline, endorphins and dopamine effect us in a way that makes us crave thrills and how it can be rather addictive.

(from about 4:00 onwards)
