well, i realised that i might want to get a media player as i might be getting a TV soon.

but for now, i need a media player that plays most formats, especially all asian chinese and japanese movies...e.g. RMVB and MKV files (defo. need) on an ..old (fat back) TV...xD

problem is, im not sure if i can connect...like what cables are used? 0.0?

i have a few on my mind right now..
-Asus O!Play HD 1080p HDP-R1 Live Internet Media Streamer
-Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player
-Cyclone Primus Media Player
-Sumvision Cyclone Micro 2 Media Player

so...my budget? dont really know...depends on the player really. if its worth getting then i might spend a lot, but maybe around under £100 range =)

also if i have missed any other great media players out please share =)

If you want a cheap player without a fancy interface, you can get media players for around 40-50 quid. Connects via HDMI and plays all formats from any storage device, usb, memory card, hard drive etc. The downside is of course no onboard storage, no networking and no fancy interface. The up side is of course the low price and the practicality.

For an extra 80 quid ontop of your budget, your looking at an Acer Revo. A full blown computer that can double up as HTPC, internet machine and general computer running Windows 7. Absolute bargain if you ask me.

I wouldn't buy any of the media players to be honest. Not my cup of tea. However if you do fancy one, I've heard good things about the Apple TV. That would be my choice.

Except you have to jailbreak it to play what you want, and even then it can't play 1080p.

The problem you are going to have is connecting to an old TV without HDMI. You need to look at the specs of each player and see if it will output via component or scart, I'm not sure which (if any) do this.

If you were just using HDMI, I would recommend the WD TV Live.

I've got a Boxee Box myself, brilliant little thing that. It's had some firmware issues until recently but the recent updates have sorted mostly everything out that bothered me before.

You're getting a new TV soon anyway, and at least some of them now come with an ethernet port. I'm using a decidedly low end LG model, but it'll play video files from a usb port or a network share. Sort of like having a htpc built in.

These are good, they offer the functions that a WD TV Live does, only witha better UI. They cost almost twice as much though, so for similar money you can buy an acer revo.

I'll be very surprised if it plays .mkv though

We have the Asus O!Play HD2 HDMI 1080P Media Player & NAS on this week only at a fantastic price :) that was on your list so might be worth thinking about

That looks pretty good. I see that it can have a usb dongle to give it wifi capabilities, but can't seem to find one for sale anywhere :(
Do you have to use an official one? Or can you use other branded ones (like with the WD TV Live)?
