What MOBA?

When I play on my PC I almost exclusively play MOBA games these days. I started off with Demigod which introduced me to the genre, game never quite lived up to expectations so moved on to HoN and played it for years. Started playing LoL when my old work was being wound up as it would play on my work laptop and stuck with it for a year or 2.

Fast forward onto now, really hated the new queue system on LoL so went back to HoN for the last couple of weeks. I really do much prefer the gameplay (the complexity and unforgiving nature of it is great) and graphics style of HoN but it seems to be a dying game. A small player pool meaning some odd matchups when playing ranked games, forums pretty dead and mod scene completely dead. I feel like it would be a bit of a waste putting so much time into something that is on the decline.

So, with all that in mind does anyone have any suggestions for what to go for next? Would DOTA II be the next logical choice due to it's similarity to HoN?

Other ones I've already played:

Smite - too basic / arcadey, ok for a blast on the Xbox but that's it.
Gigantic - couldn't bring myself to play an online game after the tutorial.
Strife - played during beta, didn't think it had enough depth.

From what I have seen most of the HoN pros moved over to either Dota 2 or LoL. So take your pick of either. Sounds like you didn't like changes made to LoL, so Dota 2 would be a pretty logical Moba to try.

What about Heroes of the Storm? It's not really your typical MOBA, it takes elements of different genres and meshes them together well but it still follows a similar approach and is a very easy game to have quick goes on. Also, if you've ever played and enjoyed any of Blizzard's other games, you'll also appreciate some of the characters that you can play :)

Dota 2 is much more comparable to HoN, it's definitely the best one to transition to.

Just beware they've recently buffed a load of heroes and the game can be a bit of a joke right now.

One thing to look out for is it's a much slower game to start with.

I'm loving DOTA2 at the moment. It's the first ever game where I've enjoyed watching other people play as well. The Dota 2 tournaments channel on Youtube is really good for watching old tournaments.

DOTA 2 seems like the logical step for you tbh.

Heroes of the Storm became my MOBA of choice though, the much faster games let me get the MOBA fix I need in the kind of time I have free to play.

HON was pretty much a copy of DOTA (hence having the same heroes, albeit different names) in the begining so moving to DOTA 2 would be the closest experience.

Also the players are all trash talking *****s in DOTA 2 so should feel home from home coming from HON. :)

HOTS is also enjoyable as a quick MOBA, polished and can be a lot of fun.

None, you'll be happier person.

This really.

But if you insist on punishing yourself like us other fools and prefer complexity in your Moba over simplicity then dota2 is probably the logical choice.

I think someone mentioned it above but they only recently done a decent sized update and it needs a little tweak imo to balance some heroes back out. Get past the ******** player base though and it's a great game which always presents new challenges.

Ok thanks everyone. My mind is made up and am currently downloading DOTA2. After years of playing HoN I think i'm more than ready for dealing with countless more horrible nerd ragers.

And to the person complaining about them buffing heroes, this is nothing new. Every patch has strong and weak heroes and it changes every patch. It keeps the meta fresh.

Starting my first game now, noticed they have quite a few things for sale. Is there anything worth buying or is it all available for free?

Dota 2 all day.

Once you get past the Russians it's very fun. Lots of custom games as well.

They're all cosmetic items.

Ah k not too fussed about that. Just won my first game 10/5/17. Cant tell what's what in the shop or what the heros are just yet!

DOTA 2 is the best one i have played. ive played LoL and HoS. DOTA 2 is bigger than HoS. must be over 100 heroes to pick from. you cant play against the same hero you pick which i like. you cant buy better heroes (pay 2 win) and all heroes are free to play from the start. the games can last quite a while. well over an hour sometimes. you can buy items while in a match to increase your heroes strength.

LoL is just easier than dota 2. most heroes you either have to buy or unlock. the games are quicker aswell i think. dont last aslong as dota 2 most of the time. can buy items to increase your heroes strength in this aswell.

HoS is the easiest and quickest one out of the lot to get use to and play well. something like 6 heroes are free to play but they change every week. no items to increase heroes strength though.

Dota 2, In 20 years no other game has had the same impact on me.

Although that's probably not a good thing lol.
