Looking to buy a bike soon & have between £200 - £300 to spend, I've not cycled since I was 16 so don't have a clue on what to go for?

Would prefer a light alu frame

Would only be using it for recreation and some runs now and again

Whats best? Halfords?

For that price range you could probably get a Merida Sub 20 or a GT Avalanche 3.0. I would avoid halfords and try and hook up with a local mountain bike shop instead.

If you can spare the time I can very much recommend the guys at the Fife Cycle Centre in Leuchars :)

Really helpful and very friendly - Got my current bike (first in 10 yearsish) from them and their price was within 20 quid of an online shop :)

Just need to get out and cycle now :D

Hybrid bike?

Visit Your Local Bike Shop as they will be able to give advise on what's more suitable, plus you'll be able to get measured up for frame size.

Do not spend £200 on a full suspension bike. I'd argue that £300 is a minimum to spend on one with front suspension.

If it's mostly road then a hybrid bike would probably be best. It's more tailored to road, but can still handle light off road (canal paths etc)

A hybrid can go off road (dirt paths) I wouldn't buy a bike from Halfords. At your budget I'd be looking at a solid frame & forks.aka "old school" MTB if it has to be a MTB.

I got a Trek 4300 in '04 for I think 275 from the local bike shop -

Which reminds me , anyone know of The bike shop on Great Western Road (near ******s, at the town end) is still there? Alpine bikes I think? Drove by the other day for some tyres and it had gone ? ?? !

Got some slick road tyres, and gonna break it out for some action if the rain and wind ever stops here .

I ride a Carrera Subway 2.0, the one with disc brakes and skinny tyres to/from work.... with bigger tyres it could do mild off road/trails - no suspension fork to go wrong/sieze up so the money has been spent on better kit overall.

'Course.... the Specialized Pitch Comp 2008 has pride of place in the back room - ready for the weekend to get out on some proper trails and try and kill myself :D

Mmmmmmm 5.5" of buttery smooth suspension travel.....

You say that, but a few years back (4 or 5) when I bought a Kona from my bike shop, you didnt see many off them, and it was (still is) a very decent, well specced bike. Now Halfords sell them, does that automatically make Kona a poor brand?

I got a 2nd hand trek too, man they are light! would recomend it to anyone for a 1st bike to get back on the saddle, hell if your near Wigan, ive us a shout ill come riding too lol!

Colin

Kona are overpriced, you can get a better specced bike for less money.

Depends what you are after and if you know where to buy from and cut a good deal. You never pay full price for a mountain bike. I always manage to knock at least 10% off as well as get extras thrown in.

Either way, rrp or discount more expensive than some other brands. Also 10% discount is lousy, some other brands have 25-33% discount, and I'd rather not have some bundled rubbish attempting to sweeten the deal (usually rubbish set of lights and a lock, which I have already or buy better versions insteads)
