i'a thinking of buying a synology ds 216j, but am not sure what drives to put in it...

I have a couple of WD 2tb caviar blacks which would probably do for size but are they suitable for a NAS? Or should I sell those and look st something like WD Reds? I'm planning on using it to play videos through my amazon TV box.

One more question is it possible use the drives not in raid i.e. 2x2tb drives = 4tb of storage??

Thanks

WD Red's are designed for NAS use although your blacks would also probably be fine. It is possible to use them just as JBOD (please don't RAID across them in RAID0 as that's asking for trouble) but do ensure you have a good backup of your data (either way).

i have a 215j with 2 x hitachi 2tb in raid 1 config in it. been ok for the last 2 years. i'm going to upgrade the space to 4tb and probably going to go for 4tb toshiba n300/4tb wd reds.

i say get the nas and try it with your drives in raid 1
