While using my netbook, I was wondering if I am the only user of a netbook on OCuk forum, or is there more of us? So here is the question (or couple of them):

  • What netbook do you own?
  • What do you use it for?
  • Is it single or multi-boot?
  • What OS(s) do you use?
  • Have you made any hardware changes or other modifications?
  • Any recent situations where you thought it's "good to have my netbook with me"?
  • and to finish off post a pic of it :D

ASUS EeePC 1001HA

Mostly university work, research, producing articles. Only use it on the move or when in front of the telly.

Single boot. Have tried a multitude of OSs.

Windows XP SP3 OEM currently. Best battery life of all (can squeeze 6 hrs - it's epic)

No modifications.

Recently, running on analytical equipment in university requires my prescence for 10 minutes, every 80 minutes. In between, I jump on the netbook and do some work. VERY useful since it's more powerful and much faster than the machine I'm provided with at uni!

I am proud owner of a Acer Aspire One D255 - Dual Core version as well as DDR3 RAM and not the occasionaly DDR2 :D

I am currently using it for University work and College work, with the off chance that i do some web development on it, as with a small display, i can get a feel for how big my site has to be, for accessability etc.

Mine came with a Dual Boot to Android, but its quite bad and i only use it when im bored. The Dual Boot to Android works fine when you are wanting a quick browse into the web, and with me owning an Android phone too, its proving to be quite useless, as well as the security issues with it - no password protection, only when you boot into windows are you asked for the password :)

Erm, Windows 7 Starter and Android, dont know the version sorry.

Not made any changed to the netbook itself, dad kindly made me a stand out of spare pieces of wood and it looks nifty to say the least :D but i am considering upgrading to 2GB RAM later this year for some more "umph" but not sure when.

The good thing about having my netbook, for that situations event, was my previous job interview :D just had it on Friday actually. I was sat infront on 2 people, male and female and i had to show them some of my work, so i thought, my videos and images of my work are stored on my netbook, ill give them a peak :). They seemed impressed that i just opened up my netbook and showed them what i was capable of which i showcased my website and the bits and pieces i used to create it, as well as some modelling i had created recently.

Sorry for the image quality for the above image, i had to crop down the size and it lost some clarity and my dads camera was really bad :(

i have a hp mini 311c 3gb ram ion etc

i dont use it ;p impulse buy

I wanted a mini 311c but i couldnt find one for my price range which was a max of £250 so i went with my Acer posted above.

Only reason i considered the 311c was for the 11.6" display, the ION graphics and the larger resolution and also the large guidance when slightly overclocking the cpu from 1.6 to around 1.9ghz, however the base model was £290-£310 which constantly fluctuated throughout the web so it was hard to find them.

ye i bought mine for 235 on weekly deal , then bought 2gb ram + external dvd-rw etc

havent really used it as much as i thought i would but who knows come holiday time it might be better,

i never overclocked mine or anything only thing i done was remove the processes running from 53 down to 23ish im to lazy ;p

I've got an HP Mini 311C, upgraded to 3GB RAM, and a 64GB SSD, runs XP and 7 dual boot.

Use it when I'm away with work, for working with and for recreation like gaming and internet access over wifi in the evenings. Was going to overclock it, but never got round to though I did flash it with the hacked BIOS to access all the clocking options.

Zoostorm Freedom 10-270. It's a dinky, powerful little thing that only cost me £200.
Had to upgrade memory from 1GB to 2GB though, and then upgraded from Windows 7 Basic to Ultimate.

The bad thing is its 3 hour battery life :[

My Acer is around 6-7 hours battery, loving it atm :D i still fancy getting a 13.3" netbook/notebook and i am considering buying one closer to the date when i start my university degree in September this year.

Looking at the UL30A and the Acer 8371, they are good contenders, however prices will fluctuate in the next 5 months so other things will enter the market.

I have a Packard Bell Dot MA. It has an AMD Athlon L110 cpu clocked at 1.2ghz, it has 64bit support, 1366x768 display,ATI x1270 graphics, 2gig ddr2 and 160gig Hard drive. Installed Windows 7 HP 64bit and it runs excellent. I have used it as a travel laptop and it has been invaluable for this task.
I must admit I haven't used it as much recently, but now I have got the Vega tablet it will be used even less. I might stick it up for sale soon.

I have the Virgin Media Freedom Netbook, but it is no longer used. Keep meaning to stick it on the MM. In the house I use my Laptop, which is far far better! I cannot type on the piddly little netbook keyboards, and constantly mistype. Therefore I Hate it!

Now I just use my phone for internets when not at home.

N110
Mainly Uni work, out and about internet access, carrying movies round places.
Multi boot: XP and Ubuntu
Replaced the HDD with a 640GB mechanical
Everytime i use it i think this.

Didn't have a pic of my netbook while creating the thread, so I thought I would hold on with posting. Got the pic today, so here we go:

  • Samsung N110
  • Mainly web browsing, uni work, and creating websites from time to time.
  • Multi-boot, Windows XP SP3 and Backtrack 4
  • Didn't make any changes, however it would be nice to get more ram and new HDD as it started to make some weird noises....also planning on getting rid of my multi-boot setup and installing one of the lightweight linux distros, looking at #!CrunchBang with OpenBox desktop environment atm.
  • I haven't used it often recently, however, I was really happy to have it when I went to Newbury and had to stay in Travelodge for one night and God it came useful.... since Travelodge was kind of in the middle of nowhere, there was nothing to do.... so I turned on WiFi Hotspot on my Android and connected to it :D helped me a lot to kill few boring hours.
  • Here's the pic:
