What Netbook do you own?

Compaq CQ-10 500 Similar to HP mini which superceded it.
Dubai version has arabic lettering in shift position on standard QWERTY keyboard.
Bought it second hand, 4 months old. N455 1.66GHz Atom.
Upgraded to 2Gb DDR2 (the max.) Win 7 did work OK on 1Gb £32.
Upgraded windows starter to ultimate £34.90.
Use it as a lightweight carry PC, laptops are generally to big to be fully luggable when travelling. Netbook fits in briefcase, great on the train or for hotel use.
Downside small screen height res, need to modify browser to get rid of excess menu space.
Downside touchpad buttons at bottom of case, slightly awkward. A small mouse is ideal.
Upside good sized keys and feel on keyboard.
Upside fast and responsive, can do many tasks well.
3 USB2, ethernet port and wireless.

Total cost incl. upgrades ~£225

Dell Inspiron Duo. (320Gb Version)

- Barely use it TBH
- single boot Windows 7 Premium
- No Changes to hardware or software (other that getting rid of Dells bloatware)
- Rarely take it anywhere.

Nice Netbook, plenty fast enough for what i have used it.

But thining about it, and looking at my answers above I may sell it, seems a waste to have it sitting in a drawer not being used.

ye gods. i don't think i could ever live with a netbook. what res are those screens? even the 1366x768 on my laptop is killing me. :(

EDIT: i just googled the model above. 1024x600?

1024x600 on a 10" screen is decent enough (@120-130PPI depending on aspect ratio) and probably sharper than your 1366x768 laptop ;)

I might be the geek of the band... :D

I have a MSI U100+ (with two batteries) upgraded to 2 GB RAM, but I don't use it at all as just 2 days later I had a good deal with a MSI U115 (upgraded to 2 GB RAM and the 8 GB SSD was upgraded to 32 GB) + the standard 160 GB HDD ! Windows 7 Home Premium + Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.

I added a resistive touch panel, but didn't like the single touch panel, so I just sent it back to the vendor. I was awaiting for a multitouch capacitive touchscreen, but as I now have a Samsung Galaxy Tab, don't know if I will buy such a touch panel now... ^^
May yes, may be not, as my first plan was to completly modify it and flip the display over the keyboard with a touch panel so it could be use as a tablet and/or a netbook with touch capabilty...

Otherwise, I also have an Asus N10Jb that I only use as a Media Center with an ExpressCard Tuner TV with Windows 7 Home premium and connected to a large monitor. Upgraded to 2 GB with a 7200RPM HDD for video TV recording.
This was one of the rare Netbook with an ExpressCard slot and hybrid GPU (Intel and NVidia) and HDMI out, all in the same machine. Really silent for a Media Center !
My best buy I guess, even if the battery life isn't as good as with the other Netbooks, but not a problem as I never user use it on mobility... :o

I have many other machines, but not Netbooks, so no need to mention them, except the Acer Aspire 1825PTZ with multitouch capacitive touchscreen, which also explains why I'm not in a hurry to modify the MSI U115, now... ^^

Sorry no pictures at the moment.

I would like to see these, all of them! :D sounds sweet. I wouldnt dare touch my netbook and attempt to give it a facelift with a flippy panel touchscreen, however cool it would look, especially when i laugh at those with other netbooks similar to mine at uni lectures :D

I have many Netbooks, Laptops, two 7" tablets and one Desktop, but only a small flat so not easy to place all these in a single place to take a picture... ^^
Unless I hang them up to the ceiling. :D :p

May be one day, if I have the "courage" to collect them in the same place ? But as already mentioned, place is my problem at the moment.

Regarding the mod of a netbook as a flipping tablet, you can watch at these links :

I already have the G-sensor, but no touch panel anymore... ^^

May be not the best photos ever, but this is the best I can do with my mobile...

You can click on the small photos to have them in full size.

Four of them are not power on, and the white box is an empty box which was replaced by another mini tower you can guess on the top right of the stand (the one with a big round button).
One tower you can't see is just below the white box and the other one missing is the mac mini... ^^ ;)

On the first picture, you can guess the Asus N10Jb working as Media Center Box with Tuner TV on (the one at middle right with the Windows blue logo) and connected to the monitors. I have a KVM so I can switch between the Asus N10Jb and the mini tower (which holds 6 HDD)... ;)
The one at middle left has the size of a Netbook, but this is not a Netbook : it's a Fujitsu Siemens 8.9" P1610 Tablet PC.
On top just above the Asus N10Jb and which is also not power on is also not a Netbook, but an Asus U1F 11.1" laptop. Who knows about this one should also know it has one of the best display screen ever. ;)

Voilà !

No need to describe the others I guess, just that the one in front of the monitor is the touch Acer 1825PTZ with Ubuntu on, but it can dual-boot with Windows 7. One of my favorite with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and in some way the 15.6" MSI-X600 (left of the second picture).

Current Netbook
  • Black Samsung NC10
  • Web Development and Uni work
  • Was dual boot, now single boot
  • Ubuntu Netbook Remix with a LAMP+F and ROR installed, used to dual boot Ubuntu Desktop and W7
  • Upgraded to 2gb RAM
  • Every single day

Old Netbook
  • White Samsung NC10
  • Nothing, it was a project that went wrong
  • Triple Boot
  • OSX, W7 and Ubuntu Netbook Remix
  • Upgraded to 2gb RAM, Dell Wireless card, touch screen
  • Never, then the touch screen died and the OSX install got corrupted, so I got shot

Both on mine with my Granny's N130:
