I'm going to upgrade my 1280*768 19" tv to a samsung 1920*1080 24" monitor and think my single 5770 will struggle on high settings with it.

Would a 4 month old 5870 @ £150 be a good upgrade?

I would be willing to go to £200 for a better GPU if there is one, but would I get better performance? 5870 seems really good.

I only have a 500w PSU so that rules out xfire.

CPU will be a phenom ii x4 @ 3.9 Ghz powering it.

the 5870 is still a good card but 150 is a bit steep could you get it a bit lower also have a look at anandtech for some bench marks of cards in your price range
 
I've just been thinking about switching from a 5870 to Nvidia and looking on anandtech, I would need to be getting a 570 or higher and those are serious money.
The 5870 is still a great card, but second hand, 4 months old or not, you should be looking at closer to £100. On the Members markets of a few forums they regularly sell for that.
