What new skills to learn over the summer.

For summer I am:

  • Continuing training for climbing Mont Blanc this summer
  • Bulking up for American Football for varsity next term
  • Learning PHP

Get a job and start repaying your debt to society for missing out on tax payments while you were a tax dodging student :p

Learn some 3D design and animation using Blender.
Either that or learn some programming or website design (Javascript, HTML, CSS etc)

It's what I do when I want to learn a new skill. Right now I'm designing myself a luxury home using AutoCAD and 3ds max.

Motorbikes don't really appeal to me, also I passed my driving test last year.

Still think everyone who drives should at least attempt the CBT. Its a completely different experience and I think raises awareness in a lot of drivers as to how vulnerable motorcyclists can actually be. I have only just done my CBT but have always looked out for bikers due to having a lot of friends and family who ride.

Plus its fun.

I'd go with those saying learn a language - you could get a part time job, save up, and plan a holiday around your new language for the end of summer.

Keeps you busy, something to aim for, an enjoyable vacation before going back to uni and it looks good on the CV as well! Can't lose.

Some really good suggestions and also a couple of silly ones but thanks anyway.

Have made a list of things to do that include working out and getting a job. I'm also starting to read more books, I'm also going to help parents with some DIY and renovation.

To those that suggested learn a new language, how would I start off?

Thanks again :)

Looks for specialised programs that can help you? I think Rosetta Stone is pretty good for Germanic languages. Personally, I'm doing Japanese and so am using a program called 'Human Japanese'. Works really well.

After that, you'll need to immerse yourself in the culture/people of the language to really grasp it fluently.

Learn SQL, VBA, how to use excel & other Microsoft packages (if you don't already) - will be a good fall-back being able to get a job in an office (higher than entry level).

Awesome stuff, its something I hope to do at some point. Are you going with a group or are you arranging one of those guided expeditions? Hows the training going?

Have a sit down and think of the thing's you have often found yourself wanting to do but then thought to yourself I simply do not have the time!

Procrastinating over things you've procrastinated over in the past?

He could just spend the summer trying to copy Magnolia on the forums, it may destroy his mind but it'll amuse the rest of us.

All in all depends on what you want really. Last summer I spent a month in Ghana as a medical volunteer. Was a real eye opener on how a lack of the basic medicines and drugs cause so much death and suffering in the world, you read about it in the papers and all that but I was quite apathetic until I witnessed myself. I like the learning a new language and going on holiday to visit a country that speaks the language too :D

Get fit, go swimming and the gym etc. (this will make you feel incredible as long as you go a few times a week and put some effort in)
Do a first aid course or maybe a language course?
