Hi,

In a nutshell... i've got a xp media centre pc that the keyboard had stopped working within windows on. It works fine at the bios level and works perfect on other pc's etc. I've also tried other keyboards on this media pc and they dont work either.

Trouble is, I cant therefore login into the machine to diagnose the problem further, as I can't enter my password :) I also can't remote desktop on to the machine as the firewall is blocking that.

I've tried booting in safe mode, and also tried the repair option on the media center xp cd boot mode. What next? i was thinking the only option left is to use a live cd that supports ntfs to copy check my files are all backed up (i think they all will be already), and then just format the disk and install xp media centre again? any better idea's?

I have searched the net for it, but only points me in the direction of 3 things.... 1) broken keyboard = nope. 2) corrupt registry = maybe 3) accessabilty remapping by accident = very unlikely and i've tried to get in via that method too... to no avail.

What the best live cd that supports ntfs? knoppix?

Cheers.

yep it is... but i've also tested another usb keyboard and a ps2 one. All do exactly the same thing... and all work on other machines.

So its multiple keyboards with the problem and on both USB/PS2? Have you got a mini Bermuda triangle in your room then?

Have you changed anything in the bios? So the keyboard(s) all work OK in the bios? Its Windows where things go belly up?

Give Knoppix a go or Ubuntu Live CD if you just want to get into some OS to test the keyboard(s) out.

No, i know its not the keyboard... its windows thats causing the problem.

Not touched the bios in months. Keyboards work fine in bios, boot cd's etc (everywhere except windows).

No, thats not what i want them for. I want one that supports NTFS and will allow me to copy files about on my harddisks before I format and re-install windows again.

Any idea's which live cd's support NTFS????

Anyone else???

I was hoping someone would be able to help me try and diagnose/fix this? or recommend a live cd that's perhaps good for diagnosing problems AND supports NTFS?

Not just ask me question's i'd already answered, and then point me in the direction of google for a product I had already suggested myself.

Well sorry for trying to help.

I pasted that Google link because I hoped it would show to you that Knoppix does support NTFS.

And please tell me which questions I asked that you already answered? I asked about the bios because I don't think you made that clear. I knew you could acccess the bios but you didn't say whether you had made any changes.

Right OK. So me wanting to confirm something so I don't get confused later on is a problem for you? Thanks.

Jesus you're temperamental:rolleyes:

Look, I put my whole thought process and where I have currently got upto in my diagnosis in my original post. This is not your average joe blogs problem. The chances are it is a corrupt registry (it seems), but because of the nature of the problem itself I can't log into the machine to diagnose/fix it further.

I already knew knoppix supports ntfs, but asked for the 'best' one as some live cd's might provide better support than others or have some other tools on the cd that might be useful to me. Even if i hadn't known whether ntfs was supported on knoppix, I am more than capable of typing 'ntfs knoppix' into google myself.

Like I said before, I was hoping for informed idea's of what to do next. I've already said I was sorry for any offence caused, and I answered all your questions first time (even tho i'd already answered them), but then you came back with google link  which is pretty much the annoying 'just google it' response for what is actually a reasonable problem. All you've managed to do is bump your post count up, spam my thread, get yourself annoyed and tell me nothing.

If i'd wanted an un-informed answer i'd have 'asked jeeves' :D

:o

Anyone else?
