Hi all,

I finally got the final piece to my new rig (4gb of (2x2gb) pc6400 OCZ).

So i was putting it all together and o noes i dont have a lga775 bracket for my mobo (gigabyte 965P-DQ6). So i look around my house and cannabilise a number of other pcs in a desperate attempt to find somthing that would allow me to install my heatsink off my previous system (x2 4400 stock cooler :p ).

With no luck I deside to do this...

To be safe ive underclocked it to 1.2ghz @ 1 volt (quad core q6600).
CPU temps are around 40 to 50c, but everest says the core temps are around 50 to 60, which temp should i go by for safety?

I've ordered a tuniq tower which should come tomorow :) Hopefully the heatsink wont fall off before then

Wow, very brave risking a £350 CPU on a DIY heatsink... glad to see it does the job though LOL

Personally, if it was me, I just wouldn't be using my PC for a few days... but if you must then I wouldn't push it any further than you are now... there's been many threads on CPU temps but generally I like to keep my temps below 60C, but in theory your safe well above that mark.

What was giving the first reading? The BIOS?

run it flat outside the case, for testing parts in an rma department, the bracket for some heatsink, i can't remember which, plus a zalman 9500(maybe a smaller zalman, twas a long time ago now), was all that was used. the bracket had bits that stuck up in corners just enough that the sink if it did move, wouldn't slip far to either side, and a slightly larger than normal amount of arctic ceramique would keep it stuck well enough to the core to not need installing. it allowed for a hugely faster turnover of checking what parts booted and getting a mobo up and running in seconds to check if it boots.

so basically if its flat and its not moving much it should be fine. i wouldn't put it verticle with what you've got there, though if you use zipties they'd probo hold indefinately with decent pressure and fine. loads of people hold huge sinks on their gpu's upside down with zip ties.

hehe, it is vertical :S lol

and its being held on with decorative ribbon :D

The first reading is about 40 to 50, thats the cpu temp, but the cores (1 through 4) are about 50 to 60.

If the worst happens the cpu shuts itself off when temperature exceeds a certain threshold right?

Cheers.

no.... the WORST thing that could happen is the HSF falls off and bounces around wrecking your GFX, mobo, ram and CPU in the process.

Got my tuniq tower today, best heatsink ive ever had. Ambient room temp is about 24c, processor idle is 29c.

This heatsink was huge and was worried bout it not fitting on my board (965p-dq6) after hearing people talk about having to remove the crazy cool heatsinks from the back of the board. Mine fitted fine though, had to omit the springs.
