what os for a server?

I take you mean for home.

If so you would be best looking at Linux unless you are happy to shell out for Windows server.

If you give us a bit more of an idea of how you plan to use it I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions.

yea just home use, i intend on building a media center pc too which will store the music and videos etc on the server so that the other computers can access the files aswell without the media pc being on 24/7

currently there are 3 desktops and a laptop. i have parts lying around to make up a server. media center pc will be in the near future.

windows xp would be fine, you only need server when there's more than 10/12 (can't remember which) pc's that access the files, as thats the limit (servers are unlimited)

2k would be fine too, but if you want to access it over the internet too, then xp's firewall might come in handy

i reccomend using nlite on whichever you choose, to remove the crap, so its a nice slim os :)

xp it is then

with only 1gb ram and either a 2700 or 3200 would this 'server' be slow?

im thinking of getting gb network cards for each machine and a gb switch aswell to speed things up

i have a pc that does the same as yours, think its only got 256mb in it, if you have antivirus on it, then set it to ignore the media filetypes.. eg avi, mpg, mpeg, mp3, vob, jpeg and you'll stop it scanning things that you know are fine

works fine sharing pics/video/music between 2pc's and 4 macs, its a p4 2.8 i think, its on a 100mbit nic to the rest of the boys, and i have a direct gigabit connection to it (as i administer it!)

also, set it to read only for all of the media, i remote desktop to the server and copy things across using the server to control it (so no one, not even me can edit files across the share) easy to setup, simple file sharing works fine!

-just remoted in to it and it does only have 256mb, one thing that i do is not share anything on the same drive as xp runs on (well a couple of small files is ok), just to keep the os running smooth, not had any problems at all since i set it up a few months ago
