What OS for my Mac Mini

Hello,

I've just purchased a second hand Mac Mini for a really good price.

I've been looking at buying one for ages and couldn't turn this one down.

Its a late 2006 model with a 1.66 Core Duo CPU and 2GB ram.

I'm going to be installing a OCZ Vertex 3 120gb SSD in the next few weeks.

The Mac's supplied with OSX 10.4. Would I be ok to buy 10.6 and load it as a fresh install on the new hard drive or would 10.5 be the limits with this spec?

Thanks for any help/advice.

Mark

Thanks for the quick reply.

Just getting myself back in to Mac's :-)

Should I be able to go from 10.4.9 to 10.6 doing a fresh install or will I need to buy a 10.5 disk as well?

Thanks again
Mark

It's possible to install Lion too but with a bit of fiddling. It's purely a superficial limit Apple put in place, rather than a hardware limitation.

Wouldn't fancy running Lion on 2gb ram though! Was looking at one of these myself until I saw the ram limitations!

To the OP - Was it a private sale/auction you bought from? Looking for one of these myself !

got it off avf boxed with all accessories etc so pretty pleased with that. I've also purchased the apple bluetooth keyboard and a magic mouse as well to complete the set up and will probably get the SSD after payday and then upgrade to 10.6.

If I get enough use out of it I may then sell it on (for little loss hopefully) and get something slightly newer and quicker that'll run the newer software and look at running plex on it as well as I don't think this one would handle it to well

That's an awfully good price... I'd take it off your hands for that or even a bit more!

Thanks.

I was very happy with the price I've seen the g4's going for that still in some places.

As I say I'll use it for now and if I use it quite a lot I'll get a bit better spec'd one without losing anything on this.

It's not to bad at all. There is a very slight yellow tinge to the top white bit of casing but nothing to bad at all and the rest of it I can only describe as mint.

I'll add some pics up on the apple hardware pictures bit next week
Thanks

You must be patient! I have an iMac with 4gb and hackintosh with 8gb and the difference is massive!

This MacBook Pro has 8Gb as I lost patience with it beachballing on 4GB.

For the intended purpose the basic mini is fine with 2GB. Even the low-end Air comes with 2GB.

I also bought one of these exact specs but only got 1GB RAM - same for £100 delivered! Also might buy a Core2Duo version for £100 also. Not installed SL onto the CoreDuo yet, considering putting in a cheap SSD as well to boost it a bit. Let me know how you find it with an SSD :)

Will update with a video (if I know how) once I get the SSD fitted.

Going to see a friend next week who's a huge mac fan and should hopefully get me up and running properly :-)
