What OS?

Hi there,

I am looking for a user friendly Operating system for a laptop which has the following specs:

P3 800MHz
128MB RAM (16MB of which is used for GFX)
Onboard all
12GB Hard Drive
DVD ROM Drive
Airways Wireless PCMIA card.

It needs to have the ability to surf the internet, play dvds and do office type stuff so it needs to also be compatible with all the hardware.

What do you recommend? (Apart from Windows Obviosuly)

Thinkpad per chance? Looks very much like a T23 spec or similar. I have gentoo running beautifully on my T23, and ubuntu ran nicely on it before that.

No the laptop model is Advent 5480DVD.....

Here are the actual hardware compnents:

Intel P3 800MHz
8x 24x Torisan DRD-U824 DVD ROM
Sis 630 8MB Shared (gfx)
SiS 7018 integrated (sound)
Airwar wireless pcmcia card IEEE 802.11b Compliant

Will that be compatitble with my internet as that is important.

if your thinking of linux then most people who are new to it would go ubuntu, but its really down to personal preference, or just simply leave it at a windows laptop, probably best with 2k at that spec
 
Hi there,

The only reason I want to swith to a linux type operating system is that i would like to try and see what they are like and I am getting annoyed with Windows 2k. Also Windows 2k doesnt play dvds properly....so i thought i would try a linux os....

I am currently running Knoppix live from CD to have a little play and sound works with that fine?

Ill give the ubuntu live cd a whirl later :)

EDIT: my main worry is getting the internet running under linux.....because the PCMCIA card is very old :|
