I'd recommend a second hand Landcruiser over a Discovery tbh. Much much more reliable.

What sort of money are you looking at spending? as I'm in a similar position at the moment. Been looking at the 3 main pickups: Navara, L200 and Hilux

Also been told to consider a second hand Range Rover, dependant on budget either P38 or newer shape if money could stretch that far, although I doubt I could afford new shape. Personally can't stand the Disco 1&2's sloppy ride and a defender is just not practical for motorway driving.

Was warned that the Navara engine is more prone to going wrong as Firestar_3x pointed out further up the thread by both an independant dealer and the farmer's who's land I live on. They all drive either defenders, L200's or Hilux's so I took that to be a pretty good indication.

if you want big and heavy, plenty of torque. then get F150 harley davidson edition as my mum has one. it's really nice and very quick for the size. can find one for around 12K now

Farmers don't base their choices on refinement. If I was a farmer, I'd have a defender because they are win.

Avoid a used Range Rover unless you can afford the awful running costs and repair bills. I was going to get one instead of my 530d, delighted I didn't after talking to a few of my clients!

Are any normal estate cars certified to tow a two tonne unbraked trailer? I'd be surprised if they were.

Just what I was thinking.

Just because a car has a tow hitch does not mean it's safe to tow anything (especially anything as heavy as two tonnes). It may manage it, but it would not be safe or sensible to do.

Hilux tbh.

I wouldnt tbh unless its an auto.
I have a 2008 one and although i think they are great, they have very weak clutches.
Some fail at less than 20k
