What power does the queen have?

The government in Australia was dissolved recently by the Queen's representative there, the governor general (who has the powers that the queen has).

Theres no reason it can't happen.

She holds power, but doesn't use it. She keeps government in check by being able to not sign completely ridiculous laws, and government keeps her in check by being able to stop her going rampant with power. Theoretically.

gezzz you said in your other post "recently " not 34 years ago
we wouldn't interfere now, there would be an up raw in Australia if we did

It wasn't interference. The request to remove the PM came from the leader of the opposition and his party. After seeking legal advice, the Governor General dismissed the PM to resolve a constitutional crisis. The Queen was not involved at any point in the removal of the PM or the appointment of Malcom Fraser as caretaker PM; the entire process was conducted solely by the GG.

Take all chuck norris 'facts' and replace him with the queen then you will see her true power.

Conducted solely by the GG in place of the Queen... So by extension, she did.

Well it would be quite cool to see the queen stamping her feet. Imagine the speech [to the government] would go something like "You are making yourselves look like fools and I won't suffer fools running my country..."

Personally I don't think the government, as much as everyone hates them, has actually done much wrong that any other party wouldn't have done. She could step in and force another bunch of blunderers in place but where would it actually get us as a country?

This is exactly what we have at the moment in this country, so the same action should be taken. If it's wrong, the country will vote Labour back in.

Oh, and the GG is the Queen for all intents and purposes when he acts in Austrailia, it is her power he is utilising.

Some say she has acid for blood, and that she urinates 98 RON petrol. All we know is, she's called The Queen.

I think its great we have a monarchy like we do - tho I wish they would use a little more power now and again - but I admire the way they have retained position without meddling needlessly in affairs.

I fear the day they become toothless and we are left entirely at the mercy of parliament/politicians - recent events only highlight how screwed that would be.

So I dislike those envious, short sighted, self-centered people who begrudge every penny that might possibly end up "in the royal coffers". I think as a country we should get behind her more. (not literally).

If they were constantly lording it over us and lining their pockets at our expense then I'd have a different view point, but they seem to for the most part got a good balance on serving the country, not meddling in politics and our day to day lives while still being head of state - but to repeat myself I do wish they would be just a little more active in the political situation.

thats what i was on about the queen or GG wouldnt just dismise the PM off there own back, they were asked to step in

Well, no. She didn't make any of the decisions, she wasn't consulted at any point, and she didn't take any action. It was all done by the GG.

Insofar as the GG represents the Queen, you could say that it was done on her behalf. But that's all you could say. She wasn't involved, and she wasn't invited to be involved. She even sent a message stating that she had no wish to be involved.

All of which adds more weight to the argument for Australia becoming a republic.
