what power supply unit do i need for this build?

The Antec and Seasonics are made by Seasonic, the RM series is either CWT (channel well tech) or Chicony power tech.

Seasonic are considered one of the best, but Delta Electronics are also making some great PSU's and beating Seasonic at their own game in the high-end PSU market it seems.

Is all corsair psu's like this or specifically the RM series ?

Most of the Corsair range are CWT now. Only the ultra high end Corsair units use a premium OEM now.

Essentially Corsair grew their PSU brand by selling Seasonic units at good pricing, but then after a few years moved to CWT to lower costs, but left the RRP/Retail pricing higher to make more profit. Essentially CWT are fine but not quite the high level of reliability that Seasonic offers.

Yeah, I made a post in one of Ace's threads about Corsair PSU's if you wish to read it (the thread is a Antec PSU thread). Completely unbiased. Well, I own a Corsair PSU however I'm not a fan of what Corsair have done.

Seasonic are an OEM company who actually manufacture PSU's for other companies, like XFX/Antec/Corsair etc.

They also produce their own retail products too.

Some PSU's do vary depending on the OEM factory/company used to make them. Corsair built up a brand following using Seasonic etc and then once they had market share they moved to an inferior OEM company who made the PSU's at a lower price, but Corsair left the pricing at the old higher pricing. Thus making loads of profit on PSU's.

So the more switched on enthusiasts and customers tend to avoid Corsair for this very reason, maybe a little underhand?

Pastymuncher, I'm sorry but changing a TX PSU from Seasonic to a CWT and calling it TX V2 is not the way forward. If the V2 was lowered in price to reflect CWT then fine, fair enough! But that didn't happen.

Perfect example the old CX 400w PSU was made by Seasonic and had a +12v rail output of 360watts

Then they EOL'd it and released a new CX 430w made by CWT that only sustained 336w of power on the +12v rail.

So to release a replacement PSU with a higher stated wattage on the box, but lower REAL output is really bad!

Dude, chill out. It was meant to be in jest and a heads up for the grief you are going to get for saying bad things about Corsair.

I agree with everything you said. I would never buy a Corsair and the CX range is rubbish compared to the original CX400.

No worries, but I think this is a strong topic which is bad.

The corsair appreciation society can get rather defensive.:D

Bring them on!

No problem, glad you understand better now.

all i could think of when planning what im going to buy in a few months for my pc was a Corsair psu, but thanks to ace modder, i understand what kind of mistake i was about to make. what are the warranty for corsair psu's?

On a similar note to the op(save me having to make a thread asking basically the same question), would a 750/760w PSU be enough for a oced 4770k with xfire 6950s(unlocked to 6970) which will be upgraded to xfire/sli r290x/gtx780 in the near future and custom water cooling(dual loop, 2 for CPU/motherboard and 1 for the GPU) or will 850/860w be better?

I have been looking at either the corsair ax760/860 or the seasonic 760/860w or seasonic-x 750/850

No harm in making your own thread.

Answer: 800 W according to http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_6950_crossfirex_review,14.html. I would expect 750 W to be fine though (Seasonic, great brand).

A top quality 750w should be ok for 2 x 6950s and a 4770k even with an overclock :)

But for an extra £10 I would look at getting an 850w personally just for that bit of headroom.

I know a friend is running a 3570K with 2 x GTX 670s on a 620w PSU, that is fine :)
