My sister is thinking of getting my nephew a ps5 and asked me which one to go for, disk or digital. So he has a ps4 from years back atm and I’m afraid that’s all I know so any help appreciated?
Thanks

I'd go with the BD drive version as it's always good to have the option to buy physical games, you can get them used for cheaper, sell them etc.
Look for the new 1216A, it's the latest revision (C Chassis) on 6nm, draws less power and produces less heat.

Thanks I knew about having the option to play old media but didn’t have a clue about the revision, will let her know.
Thanks

I also come from PC and had absolutely no doubt the BD drive version was the better option in the long run.

I bought five of the best games on the system used and they cost me like around 80$ in total. Doing that without a drive and not having to wait for discounts? "Oh, I want to play Demon's Souls and Returnal but they're both still 70$ on PSS, hope they drop down to 35$ on Christmas":P Well, I got both for less than half of that because when I move away from PCs I'd rather use one of the few advantages consoles have over them.

You can buy digitally but you have the option of going physical should the need arise and having options is hardly a bad thing.

Disc version.

He likely has ps4 games on disc and I presume they can be played on in ps5 as well.
Discs, trading, friends borrowing/lending disc games , vice versa, better options for him.
I’m digital now but still prefer to have the disc version.

Agreed, for most people like the OP the drive version is better. So far I‘ve just used the PS5 free game library combined with a discounted PS sub. Haven’t needed to buy many games yet other than HFW and UC4. I’m in the minority because I’ll pay over the odds for the convenience of just buy and play.

Depends on how you prefer to own and use games.

If you have a disc back catalogue and or like to buy a hard copy game, complete it and sell on then absolutely the disc version is going to work better for you. It’s also a pretty good Blu Ray player :)

If you are not so fussed about disc games and selling on, or prefer buy to own digital media then the digital version might suit you best.

On balance, I would say the disc version suits more people overall.

Yeah, absolutely understandable. In my case, I just wanted to have that option to fall back on if I want to get certain games cheaper or sell them on later and I think it was worth it. Myself, I have some digital and some physical titles.

Can't deny digital is more convenient and PS Extra is a pretty damn good deal for someone new to the PS ecosystem, lots of good games to try out.
