HI,

Just wondering what pumps people would recommend i should get. Got a Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 and a XSPC Single 5.25” Bay Reservoir so far to cool my cpu. And wondering what pump, hoses (clear or green) and water block people would recommend. I've got an AM2 socket board on my pc.

this is what I'd try and get :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x OcUK Tech Lab - D5 Vario Pump & Alphacool Clear HF D5 Top Value Combo £84.98
1 x EK-Supremacy - CPU Waterblock - Nickel Plexi £56.99
2 x Mayhems Pastel - Mint Green Coolant 1L £14.99 (29.98)
2 x XSPC 7/16" ID [16/11mm] High Flex Hose - Clear £2.99 (5.98)
Total : £189.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

also, you may want to go for 1/2" barbs or 7/16" id 5/8" compressions :)

+1!!!

I'd go for barbs personally

PS, your sig is too big OP

how so? Do you mean it's stronger?

Acetal is stronger, but i'd go for whichever one you think looks best. Plexi is fine as long as you are careful with it, it is prone to cracking if fittings are overtightened (impossible to do by hand for the majority of people). Acetal is definitely the stronger material and if you think it looks better, go for it :)

Given that the op has gone for the cheapest radiator and res that he can find I doubt hes going to want to blow that much on the rest of his kit. Unless they were just random choices. The rad is going to need high speed fans to get good performance out of it and the res is ok but I can't help thinking you would have been better off going for a pump/res solution.

Can you send them back under DSR or have you had them too long now?

D5 is a great pump but for just cooling a single CPU I'd go for a DDC 18w with a XSPC pump/res/top, a Aqua Computer Cuplex Kryos Delrin for Socket AM3/AM2 as a block and the fattest tubing and connections you can get :)

Not much between D5(in setting 5) and a DDC 18W in terms of performance.
In fact I would say a DDC with an aftermarket top would outshine a D5! But D5 is silent!

if thats all u want to cool i would even go that far with the pump a nice little 400 lph job will suffice in a small system like that

allthough ofc the bigger pump give you more headroom in the future u can get a small pump for 30 quid thatll easily do the job tbh

True a 18w ddc is still probably overkill, plus he probably won't be able to hear any pump over the fans needed for that radiator :) a 10w or even one of the small phobya/ek pumps would do.

I'm not 100% sold on the d5, being the be all and end all, I've got 4 watercooled rigs running at the mo, one has a d5, the others are DDCs all pumps are sitting on silicone gel blocks, all make some noise of type or another, my tj07 has a Ddc and im sitting next to it now and can only hear the fans.

But what we really need to know is more requirements from the op. I.e. what are his priorities? Cost? Silence? Superior cooling to air? Just wants to try out waterproofing for fun? It seems like cost is one at the moment.

Well i don't mind spending that much money on pumps etc a bit of future proofing is always good. I like the look of the D5 with plexi.
The reason for my Rad is that there is not a lot of space in my 1100 so i was looking for the thinnest one. I've brought some scythe 1450s to mount on the rad. And i choose that res cause i thought it looked nice and only had 1 bay left as the others have a DVD drive and a fan controller.
But as they weren't much and you recommend a better ones i might be tempted to replace them.

I'm not saying you have to, its just that as a general rule thin rads with high fpi needs fast fans and are generally noisier, thicker rads with low fpi work better lower speed fans. As long as you are aware of that fact and are ok with it then thats fine :)

Just been looking at your other thread, see you are doing a vertical mount behind the drive bays, that case is really not well designed for watercooling internally but you can get away with it, I've done a few rigs with vertical rads and they work ok, just be prepared to try reversing the flow of the fans to get the best result, just something to be aware of.

Thing is you will enjoy the process regardless, and part of the fun is trying different things and experimenting. Everyones advice will be based on their own experiences.

My basic advice will be get a thicker radiator, stick with the Scythe GT fans, go for 1/2" internal diameter tubing and don't get too hung up on bling. The current crop of cpu blocks are all within a few degrees of each other and with a single cpu loop you don't need a massive pump, you don't need to buy expensive components but don't buy the cheapest either.

Oh and lastly have fun :) it should be an enjoyable process.

Cheers for the advice. I will see how it goes with the slim rad and if i have to have the fans up too high i will see if i can squeeze in a thicker rad inside there.
Wished i had decided to do water cooling before i brought that case but anyway it's given me a fun challenge.

yer main thing is the fun of it and getting stuff how you want it

part of it is eveyones system and ideas are unique if you saw my mix of pipework and modified parts most people would think omg wth is that all about but its the way i like it

so yer trial and error is part of the fun as long as there are no serious flaws then go with what you want be a boring old pc world if we all had the same rig

Just had a thought regarding my cheapish 240 rad. I have space at the back of the case for a 120mm rad. Would it be worth buying a high quality one and adding it to the loop?

well i would say the more radage the better as long as your getting the airflow and as long as the extra fittings etc dont restrict any flow great

always best to have more rad time for heat transfer out of water

Well having brought an SSD i feel like getting my water cooling up and running. Got the Rads, Fans, Water Block and want to buy a pump, hoses, fittings and fluid. Just going to get a cheap pump for the moment and looking at the 2.2 or 4.0 EK DCP pumps. I have 2 rads for the system now a 120mm and my thin 240. What things will i need to make it all fit? I'm prepared to pay up to £75 inc delivery to get it up and running.

Thanks for helping my spend my money in advance :)
