New to watercooling and would like to know what pump to order as quiet as possible.

I will only be cooling cpu for now (e8500) and i already have an apogee gt and a Swiftech MCR220-QP Res from a 220 compact kit.. seems the Apogee 350 is broken as it is making a horrible screeching noise and made a terrible vibrating noise right from the start.

Thanks for any help.

building a custom rig myself linky with a lot of people telling me to get laing ddc pumps :) looked up some reviews and they do appear to be in the top 5 of pumps around today

If you are looking for the best, easily available pumps then the DDC ultra 18w with an optional top such as the alphacool or Petras would be your best choice.

The D5 vario is also a very good pump and shouldn't be dismissed but it may take up a little more room as it is a little cumbersome.

Laing DDC or Laing D5 ( Also available as Swiftech branded )

I'm using both at the moment - Silent :)

Tough call really - DDC becuase it smaller

D5 mounted on a small piece of foam - No vibration/noise

DDC + Alphacool top mounted on a stand with small rubber washers - No vibration/noise

Thanks

Just wondered if the D5 made a different noise as a lot of people say the 18w DDC makes a higher pitched noise than the 10w DDC version.

I've got the 18w version.

Now you mention it , a slight noise if you put your ear to it.

And if you really try to listen out for it then less than 6" away you can here something very slight.

I'm finicky about noise and it doesn't even register to me , my OCZ PSU is loudest thing i've got.

Another quick question, with the above mentioned kit i have 3/8 barbs and tubing, would i benefit much from switching to 1/2? bearing in mind i will only be cooling the cpu.

From what I can tell, most people choose 1/2" purely for the looks. I imagine its a bit less restrictive, but I'm sure theres parts in most loops that are more of a restriction than 3/8" pipe.

Found this piece showing the effects on temps when using different diameter tubing :

The upshot is , aslong as you have a decent pump , pushing a minimum of 3LPM , the effect on heat is minimal :

TEMPS

3/8 ths / 9.6mm barbed = 33.89C
7/16 ths / 11.1mm barbed = 33.79C
1/2" / 12.7mm barbed = 33.77C
