I want to do the same but graphics hardware just isn't up to it. You need two 7970s in Crossfire just to get decent performance but titles that are poorly optimised for multi-GPUs or are simply poor console ports (which too many games unfortunately are) can still end up lower the 60fps, without even taking into account games coming out later this year and next year. I don't want to drop £900 on GPUs and £500 on a monitor just to end up with games that don't perform well maxed out.1920 x 1200. Seriously considering moving to 2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1600 for productivity rather than gaming reasons, although it would be nice in games too if I can get the hardware to drive it properly.
Personally I'm really looking forward for OLED monitors to come down in price, as £4000 for a 24.5" 1080p display just doesn't represent good value for money. I'd happily pay £1000 for a 24-27" 120Hz OLED display. Hopefully we'll see that within the next couple of years, as a 15" OLED costs just over £1000. If it was touchscreen for Win8 that would be an added bonus, though I don't particularly want to have to wipe down my display every day.
