As above.
The screens a 19" WS, and its native resolution is 1440x900 i think.
But the 360 doesn't have this resolution.

So whats the best to set it to?
Its connected through a vga MS lead.

The best resolution is 1280x768, its the closest to the 16:10 aspect ratio.

Agreed.

640*480 4:3
848*480 16:9
1024*768 4:3
1280*720 16:9
1280*768 16:10
1280*1024 5:4
1360*768 16:9

This is what the 360 supports (I think), your resolution (1440*900) is a 16:10 ratio resolution.

Im gonna have to run mine at 1280*1024 I think. Monitor supports these:

VESA, 720 x 400 - 31.5 kHz Horizontal, 70.0 Hz Vertical, 28.3 MHz
VESA, 640 x 480 - 31.5 kHz Horizontal, 60.0 Hz Vertical, 25.2 MHz
VESA, 640 x 480 - 37.5 kHz Horizontal, 75.0 Hz Vertical, 31.5 MHz
VESA, 800 x 600 - 37.9 kHz Horizontal, 60.3 Hz Vertical, 49.5 MHz
VESA, 800 x 600 - 46.9 kHz Horizontal, 75.0 Hz Vertical, 49.5 MHz
VESA, 1024 x 768 - 48.4 kHz Horizontal, 60.0 Hz Vertical, 65.0 MHz
VESA, 1024 x 768 - 60.0 kHz Horizontal, 75.0 Hz Vertical, 78.8 MHz
VESA, 1152 x 864 - 67.5 kHz Horizontal, 75.0 Hz Vertical, 108 MHz
VVESA, 1280 x 1024 - 64.0 kHz Horizontal, 60.0 Hz Vertical, 135 MHz
VESA, 1280 x 1024 - 80.0 kHz Horizontal, 75.0 Hz Vertical, 135 MHz
VESA, 1680 x 1050 - 65.0 kHz Horizontal, 60.0 Hz Vertical, 146.25 MHz

1680*1050 is very very close to a 16:9 resolution (hence you have a widescreen monitor).

You should use one of the 16:9 ratios I listed earlier.

So 1360*768 would be the best res quality wise yeah? I assume you can specify on the xbox?

Also, should I get the xbox VGA cable, or run a hdmi cable to a hdmi -> DVI adaptor?

If you use the VGA cable you will get the options appear in the Dashboard. If you use your HDMI/DVI method than as far as 360 is concerned you will still be using HDMI so it will offer you the standard 480.720p.1080i/p options.

The only real way to say which will be better is to try. Ultimately the quality of the scaler in your monitor defines the picture quality whenever the input resolution does not match your native resolution.

Either use 1280*768 for a 16:10 resolution if your monitor supports it or 1280*720 if not. It's completely stupid to choose a different 16:9 resolution unless it gives you 1:1 pixel mapping as all it does is make your image scale twice which destroys the image quality.
