What retro things have you done today?

I will post in this thread at some point (looking at assembling a Win98 PC of some variety in the near future), but just thought I'd give a heads up - Intel are removing all their legacy chipset and driver software from their website over the coming days. You can find files mirrored elsewhere around the web I'm sure, but if you were looking to acquire anything from them directly then you best do it now. Seems to affect a lot of stuff right up to S775 era and possibly newer. I went to download a driver for the onboard graphics on a 810-based motherboard personally (even though I may use an add-in card instead), and whilst there I grabbed both the 9x and XP variants of said driver as it would be removed permanently from their downloads section on October 11th!

Appreciate the heads up mate, thank you

Picked up those games today. They are immaculate! very pleased with them.
Got windows 95 installed in the week no dramas. Need to burn a disk for the soundcard drivers tho. Everything else appears fine in device manager.

Does anyone know of a specific search term for an IDE cable without the blanked pins? Almost all the ones I can find on ebay look like they have the blanked pin or ave no mention of it.

Found my Bung Enterprises GBXchanger and Mr Flash 64M flashcart. Just trying to get my Dual-P3 1GHz rig back up and running so I can try copying some games to it. Also decided that I need to backlight and invert the GameBoy screen, as I tried playing Super Mario Land 2 and realised just how godawful the screen actually was!

Made myself an Aluminium replacement badge for my Gamecube.. for no real reason!

That is awesome, kudos to you :)

Making any more ;)

I posted it on reddit and it seems to have blown up a bit, didnt realise it would be a wanted item ;) picture of it all back assembled! Would love to make the front port out of Aluminium too but I imagine that would take a lot more work. Not looked into the insides yet!

I made a few spares in case of mistakes, they all came out fine! Only thing is the fit! This one fits perfectly, a slight push fit. The others are .1mm smaller on diameter and spin freely so would need some sort of glue or double sided tape I guess! A work in progress! Happy to send you one of the spares!

I offered them up on reddit but only to those in UK for postage reasons, and most seem to be from the US!

Just a not this is on a DOL-001 model, I think the badge is different in someway on other models so can only promise a fit for that model ;)

One of the spares would be amazing, we have some crazy adhesives at work I am sure would secure it lol

Is a really cool idea for sure.

Have a feeling my unit is a 001 from memory :)

Anything would do man, just a glue would be fine just depends on if you need to remove it in the future ;)

Wing me your address in trust and I'll get one off to you in the week

So after last weekend’s escapades in getting my GBXchanger flashcart and software working on Windows 98, I ordered the backlight, bivert mod and glass screen cover for my DMG Gameboy.

Modded today and I couldn’t be happier with the result, such a good image now! Also changed the backup battery in both the flashcart and my Super Mario Land 2 - Six Golden Coins cartridge.

Nice work!

I planned to do the mod on my DMG but then was given a backlit SP and didnt even touch the old one again :(

Today I picked up a bunch of motherboards, CPUs and coolers for £25.

A Socket 478 Gigabyte board with SATA. It has bad caps - I should have checked before I handed over my money. There is a 3.4GHz Prescott P4 in there though, which seem to sell for inflated prices on eBay. Next up, a Dell:

Caps look fine. It has a ubiquitous 2.8GHz Northwood Pentium 4 in there. SATA is present again. I might use this if it takes a normal PSU and not a bespoke Dell connection. Next a MSI:

Pretty much all the caps are bad on this. This is an odd combo (for me) as it is Socket 775, DDR2 but with AGP. It came with some S775 Pentium 4 that I don't care about.

Finally, the one that got me interest in the advert: A Socket-A motherboard:

It's got an Athlon 1700+ in there are uses a Via chipset (I've had nothing but bad luck with SiS chipsets). Looking forward to making something with this.

The seller also dug out a Socket A Duron 1600 and an interesting looking purple Thunderbird 1400:

Also in the sale was a bunch of coolers. There are some useful looking Socket 7 or earlier etc style coolers that I might use adhesive thermal pads for if I ever find myself owning that sort of system again.

£25 well spent? Eh kinda. Bit annoyed I didn't check the boards before I bought them and just picked up the Socket A for £10 or something.
