What retro things have you done today?

If someone goes for it I would stick a bit in for that ATX S7 board (Guessing its S7, no AGP and 72pin ram slots.)

My £20 offer was auto declined :)

£40 was auto-declined also, which seems daft given he hasn't attracted any bids the last two times. I guess I'll just wait until the end of the auction and put £40 on it if there are no other bids.

Today I have set up the pointless system of a bog standard S775 XP PC with my ancient capture card to capture footage of a Windows 98 PC with a MX440SE solely because it has a composite out connector. I might push the boat our and invest in an S-Video cable :o

It's a blurry mess but it's kinda handy being able to install Windows 98 in a sort of PiP mode.

I also have no idea how things like resolutions and colour depth work over Composite video. I assume it can only do PAL 576i or whatever it is and not any customisable resolutions.

I like that, no idea why as you say, it’s pretty pointless. I guess you could record some footage for YouTube if that’s your bag!

I have replaced Windows 98 SE with Windows ME (controversial!) on my Tualatin/Voodoo 5 machine. Seems to be faster (which was my recollection of the era anyway) than 98 SE as well when comparing both synthetic and game benchmarks.

Then played some Quake III Arena single player campaign and realised why I love the game so much (and am still pretty darn good at it too!). Brings back soooo many memories of the era and having numerous LAN parties at friends houses!

Can sort of see some sense in that, it's far too overkill for any DOS gaming and I'm sure you have better systems for that, so you're not losing much by going ME.

Edit - my capture card has audio recording / pass through too which is also quite useful for not having to keep changing source! (although I guess that's easy enough to do with literally any sound card with Line In...)

Haha I love its ghetto flickering as it boots up. Makes me think of a Pip Boy! And I've just realised that it loops quite nicely like it's stuck on an infinite boot loop and it's making me feel frustrated! It's the PC equivalent of this.

It's a shame some games don't seem to work. I guess they run at 640*480 which my PALi capture card can't do. Or something.

That looks like a roomy case but does that big old HDD really need its own fan?!

That sort of P4 doesn't particularly interest me because I can hear it and feel the heat coming from it from here! What CPU are you using? And how does Windows 98 get on with whatever chipset that board has? Is it as compatible as a 440BX?

Its a 2.8 northwood and i think a 845 chipset. The ISA certainly has its quirks and won't work properly with some cards. Crystal Based cards work really well. As for compatibility, i'll update you as i get some games on it.

Ah OK at least it's not limited to the earlier chips. My PC I built the other day was around a 2.8 Northwood and a SIS 651 which was fine in Windows 98 (no ISA though). It was still pretty warm even under this large cooler!

Yeah it does get a bit warm. I'm on the lookout for a better CPU Cooler than the current stock one i'm rocking. That's a nice build by the way. I love small builds. Very similar to my Tualatin build but mine has a side mounted PSU!

I do love a compact build - there is something nice about these old cases that don't have front panel audio or USB cables getting in the way. It's already decommissioned (next up will probably be an XP build with it) to make way for my current dumb setup.

In my battle against heat I swapped in a 2.4GHz to replace the 2.8 which saves me 10 watts on TDP and I've found I can run the CPU at 100FSB instead of 133. So it's reported as a 1.8A GHz now. Will this give me less heat by default even if the same volts are being pumped into the CPU?

It will be marginally cooler as less CPU cycles still generates less heat. I take it you can't either use the BIOS or a BSEL mod to lower the voltage?
