What retro things have you done today?

There is no such thing as a Q6400, and the SLB6B code matches with a Q9400.

Seems legit to me, just a typo which 6 to 9 is easily done if using a numpad!
 
@LewisRaz I may have inadvertently bought an Asus nForce 750i SLI (socket 775) board, 2GB RAM and "a Core 2 Quad" CPU. It was just sitting there on eBay looking sorry for itself with 21hrs to go and no bids, with a starting price of £21. I threw a £20 "Best offer" at the guy and he bloody accepted it, it's only 5 miles away as well!

Given I already have a Q6600 and QX6700 doing nothing, if this ends up being one of those then I've got a spare for you :p

Looks like a great machine!

Perhaps not retro in the normal sense these builds still fill the high end windows XP gap which is needed for some of the older games. They certainly cant be classed with modern PCs!
 
They're on the precipice of retro and not retro I think. They definitely have a retro use - playing XP era games at 1080p plus - but they can also run Windows 10 I think just fine. I don't class them as retro systems but do retro (CD based) gaming on them.

I think it says more about how meh 2012 to 2017 was in CPU development than how "good" these CPUs are.
 
"Accidental" 775 bundle is now in my hands, Asus P5N-D nForce 750i SLI. @LewisRaz the CPU is indeed a Q6600 (so now I have two of them). 4GB of a mix of PNY and Corsair PC2-6400 RAM (two sticks of each), and other than a little dusty, seems in good order.

Absolutely no plans for it, and I'd also forgotten that I'd also bought an XFX nForce 780i Tri-SLI board, doh, that arrived today as well!

So now I have three nice S775 boards (including my Intel D975XBX) that I've got no plans for!

I need help.
 
A seller accepted an offer on an M-ATX Slot 1 motherboard and now I am in need of a 66MHz Pentium 2 :( Does anyone have any a Deschutes Pentium 2 266/300/333 they are looking to shift? (Or do a straight swap for a P3 450)
 
The QX6850 was released in Q3 2007 according to Intel ARK so almost 14 years old, that means it's got to be getting close to Retro :p

Going back to Windows XP was also nice I'd forgotten how lean it was and for gaming it's pretty good

Sounds like you got a good deal! The board you sent arrived today! Look forward to putting a build together this weekend. Thanks again for that! (super happy about the backplate too as I get a little OCD when they arent there)

Also what are we saying about 3870x2. Couple on ebay for fairly cheap right now :P

With regards to the 3870x2, I didn’t have one back in the day, but I DID have two 3870s in Xfire. Good cards!

Perfect condition mate. Just waiting for a cooler to arrive and I’m good to go! I’m not so sure about the quad core. Had bad news on MOT day so retro purchases are on hold!

edit: except the 3870x2 I just won for a £10 offer...

Loving all the 775 action guys!!

I just finished taking this apart and cleaning every single component (even polished the aluminium with autosol! The whole case comes apart). I will get some better pictures but currently installing windows 7 on it.

It was in a sorry state when I received it, but it’s literally time warp condition now. I’m well chuffed with how well it’s turned out. The case on these is amazing. I have a 730 next to refurb, that is DDR3 based with a 9770, will go SLI GTX 285’s with that.

This is my 775 XP system but its a machine I never actually built myself but bought as a whole machine off CyberMav for £50. I just added a Creative Fatality Xfi card to it.

I love this era. When we moved away from cold cathodes and cases that looked like transformers to fairly sleek black boxes. Then came the RGB monster of modern machines..
