if i run at stock speeds, is there any real difference between getting a X2 3800 and a 165? both are rated at 1.8ghz right?

not entirely sure if i'll need to be overclocking it as it will be a server i'll need stability more than speed.
Then either would be good and if run at stock the 3800 X2's gonna be the cheapest option for you!

Incidentally, you now have 250+ posts so can get on the MM. Might take a day or so to become active and then you can have a look! :)

The stepping of my 165 is CCB1E 0609FPBW it's presently sat @ 2.8ghz with 1.36v through it and doesn't go over 50 degrees C (Scythe Ninja) under full orthos load! Looks like a good stepping if anyone wanted one to clock.

@ paul8811: Sorry to hear yours wasn't a decent stepping! This place has a good list of steppings and their general clocking potential - Linky

Cheers GT problem is though getting the stepping code before you order. Seem to have borked my Mobo so might just go the conroe route now.

I know what you mean about stepping codes. Having been on some american forums it seems clear that some etailers there have the stepping code available for all to see so you can pick and choose! Don't see anyone doing that in the uk from what i've seen though! :(

I ended up getting one from a forum member in the Members Market so i knew it was going to be a great clocker!

Sorry about your mobo! But on the flip side it's a great excuse for a new conroe rig..... if slightly more expensive than you'd planned! Needs must!!! :D

yep having a poke through the MM atm :)

having narrowed it down to those 2 cpus (x2 3800/opty 165) and given that its going to be used as a media center pc/fileserver, what is more desierable, less cache but slightly faster clock speed (X2) or vice versa (opty).

i can see it being about aish £20 price difference between the two.

what will more cache get me that 200mhz extra (woo!) wont?

Exactly! As they stand they'll both perform about the same at stock - The general rule i've heard on the forums is that the extra 512k of cache per core works out the same as a 200mhz gain in clock speed.

If i were you i'd just go for the cheapest! :)

i've settled on getting a X2 3800 now, mainly because its cheaper than the 165.
thanks for the advice.

looked around for ages and couldnt find a x2 3800 at a decent price so i did what any impulsive person would do, got a e4300/asus p5b/2gb of corsair pc2-6400 ram instead. saves me a future upgrade and it means i can play c&c3 and make it look nice.

im lucky i removed the 8800gts from the order ..must wait till the new nvidia cards are out this month and hope the 8800's go down in price!

Is it true that the Opterons don't support cool'n'quiet?

Might be a concern if noise is an issue, especially for htpc use...
I've never had it on but I don't see why it wouldn't be supported like the x2 chips.
