Hi,

Having lost my Samsun Omn ia, I am now on the hunst for a cheap second hand smartphone - windows, android, or iPhone - that cost about £100.

The phone will be mainly used for:
- sat nav - so must have good turn by turn software availble, that runs quick
- watching videos (.avi / divx)
- web browsing
- camera - MUST be good, with half decdent flash
- phone/text

Be grateful if anyone could recommend something.

Cheers
R

Get an Orange San Francisco?

£90 if you can wangle student discount or even less with loyalty discount :)

Great screen, runs Android, unlock for free, can run 2.2 with custom roms.

Unfortunately - as the camera is rubbish and it doesn't seem to play DIVX - I don't think it's the right phone for me.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

It will play divx with various apps that are out on the market, if you leave it with the stock rom you are a fool tbh!

Camera is acceptable, you're going to have to make sacrifices for £100!

What constitutes a "rubbish" camera?

Most mobile cameras are utterly garbage, and don't get hung-up on what "megapixel" rating the camera has.

This is true, and under these circumstances the San Francisco unfortunately must still be considered as having a crap camera.

You want a £100 second hand smart phone. You can't expect an amazing camera without sacrificing something else really.

as in significantly worse than my Nokia N73, or Samsung Omnia.

WARNING: Anyone who wants to buy a used Samsung omnia (the one with windows mobile 6.1) don't unless you are prepared to flash it.

I managed to flash it two days ago and it is so much better, seriously straight out of the box it is a rubbish phone, you can't even scroll through the phonebook.

I think you are expecting too much for £100.

My mate got an X10 for £150 and thats by most peoples opinions fairly rubbish.

I cant think of anything in that price range that i would be prepared to use other than the San Fran. Even stuff like a HTC tatto is out of this budget second hand

San Fran can't really be beaten for a hundred squid. Next best is probably a Milestone, but they are still around £200.
I've been looking for something to replace my Dext myself, and nothing has really stood out. The full Xperia X10 is one to consider as they regularly go for under 200 and the specs are great, but the bootloader is apparently tricky which limits what peeps can do custom-rom wise, and the situation is muddy on whether or not it has multitouch support.

If a decent camera is a priority, you could consider an Xperia X8, which can be picked up for £100 PAYG from O2. Screen isn't as nice as the San Fran, but certainly better than anything you'll have used before. It's also only on Android version 1.6 atm, but will be getting 2.1 shortly. Unfortunately despite having the same CPU as the San fran, Sony only put 168MB RAM in, vs 512 on the san Fran, which doesnt help it. My sister has one and reports it being a little sluggish.

I think you're going to have to lower the bar a bit. I can't think of a better phone at around £100 than the San Fran, even considering used mobile phones. You can probably strike Windows mobiles off your list (well, any worth having), and anything to do with Apple right away for that money. The San Fran is objectively better than the HTC Legend and Hero in what it's capable of, it's just that it has that cripplingly bad camera.

AFAIK there really aren't that many decent camera phones out there in the current gen that you'll easily pick up cheaply and still have a decent phone on the back of it.

I'm not talking amazing - the HTC Hero has a more than decent camera and is in the price bracket.

What? The Hero camera is shocking! I know, I own one!

Also, the N73 didn't have that great a camera either. Now if you said N82, then yes, that was cracking.

The San Fran will have a camera equal, if not better than the Hero. So if you really do think the Hero has a good camera, get a San Fran.

Good choice, such a good phone for the price.

Got one when they had been out for about 4 or five days, were sold out in loads of places, but the thread on here made me keep looking!

Root it and get a custom rom on it before you do anything else with it!!
And bear in mind it will take a couple of reboots before it performs to the level it can, as every android phone is the same with.
