What should be my next upgrade?

My system:

CPU: i5 2500k @4.5GHz (Matterhorn pure cooler)
MOBO: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
GFX: HIS Iceq 7950 Boost @ 1100 / 1500
RAM: 8GB Exceleram 1333Mhz
HDD: Seagate 500Gb 3.5" Barracuda 7200rpm
PSU: Seasonic G Series 550w 80 plus Gold Modular
CASE: Coolermaster HAF 912 Advanced
MONITOR: AOC 22" 1920 x 1080p

I will probably get some money for my birthday soon, hence the question.

I am thinking probably either upgrading RAM or investing in an SSD? Would this be the correct assumption?

Biggest upgrade would be an SSD. You'll really notice the difference this would make to your system. Everything else looks good. Next upgrade (after SSD) would be the RAM.

Would I see any benefit in getting 16gb of RAM? I only really use system for gaming...

No.

CAD work and Video/Photo editing (heavy use) would benefit, not gaming.
