What should be put on a resignation letter?

All the core information that is needed is:

'This is my X weeks resignation from the post Y effective from Z.'

Anything else is tarting up and just trying to sugar coat the simple fact, your going. All HR will need to know is who you are and when your leaving.

To My Boss,

All the time I have worked here, I have felt overworked, underappreciated and most definitely underpaid. Quite honestly I think you are lacking in even the most basic of management or people skills, not to mention business accumen. In short, you are a **** and I would rather be anywhere else on earth, doing anything else than working here for a moment longer.

It is therefore with regret that I hereby give you notice that I wish to resign from my position, subject to the notice period stated in my contract of employment

Yours sincerely,

A N Other

Oh wait you said your job...

I'm so going to use that one day :)

Another Cambridge person? You met my boss?!

I like to think it treads a fine line between bitterness and vitriol and yet doesn't resort to profanity or direct personal attacks (apart from the 'you are a ****' bit :D)

Dear *managers name*

I would like to confirm my position as the latest rodent to be escaping this rapidly submerging vessel.

With thanks....

A quick google of "Scarface quits his job" clearly shows the best way to quit that place.

Or just...

2 weeks, i am being forced to do 2 months :(
How long have you been in your job?
What does your contract of employment say?

You do have a contract of employment, don't you? It specifies how much notice you have to give and how much notice your employer has to give you. If you didn't read your contract of employment when you signed it, look on it as a valuable learning opportunity :p

Dear <insert manager name>

I slept with your wife, she was terrible, therefore as sleeping with bosses wife is not a perk I hereby resign from my position as <insert job here>

Kind Regards

There is obviously a need to state your intentions. But think "references" before getting personal, clever or amusing.

Also, to state the obvious, you should speak to your boss and verbally let him know you are leaving, the letter is really just a formality for the personnel department. Ask your boss how to word the letter.
