I would be very happy to be convinced that a petrol is better, but my (admittedly not very detailed) calculations show the following:
Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Cost: £4000, Insurance: £800, Tax:£155, Fuel: £880
Mondeo 2.0 Petrol Cost: £4000, Insurance: £800, Tax: £235, Fuel: £1150
Meaning over a max of 2 years ownership the difference is £700.
This is obviously a small difference, but I'm guessing the 2.0 Petrol engine is too small for a car the size of the Mondeo, so to really see the benefit of a petrol over a diesel then a bigger engine is desired, which increases the gap:
Mondeo 2.5 Petrol Cost: £4000, Insurance: £1000, Tax: £245, Fuel: £1400
Total difference over 2 years = £1500
