What should I do?

Hi.

Well as you can see from my specs, my processor is old, my ram is old, my motherboard is old, my hdd's are old too, anyway, I know an extra 1GB of ram would be a good upgrade, but I cant see how its worth spending money on 1GB DDR400 when/if I upgrade to C2D this summer.

Anyway, This card is bottlenecked very, very VERY bad by my CPU, so what I was thinking is to sell the 8800GTS and pick up an X1950Pro for cheap, I dont like Nvidia much tbh, I miss ATi and there monthly Driver releases and there stable drivers.

What I was also thinking is, sell the 8800GTS and buy an R600 when it comes out, but then I hit another bombshell, my PSU only have 1 PCI-E connector so its no good :(, so I dunno what to do, I need a good upgrade strategy and it seems like selling the 8800GTS might have to be part of the upgrade strategy, but for some time I will be back to my old X800XTPE which works in some games better and I get less stuttering in some games too (UT2004, TDU).

I hope that makes sense, I really dont know what to do and if I should sell my 8800GTS 640.

I wont pay more than £20 for 1GB DDR400, so I dont think I will find anything that cheap, and £30 for a dual core AMD CPU.

But still, I hate Nvidia after this card and there driver releases, I need to do something lol

If you're happy to run things on an X800 than I would. At the end of the day, it's all about what you're prepared to accept. Some people would rather pay loads and loads to keep up to date, while others will still be running 9800pro's etc and will be perfectly content with that.

If you're playing games like UT2004 etc, do you really need the 8800? If it was me, I would:

- Sell 8800 and go back to X800
- Save some money
- In the Summer, buy C2D, 2GB RAM, Mobo, then a PSU + R600 if you can stretch to it, or go for an 8800GTS, which will have dropped in price by that point anyway.

Of course I am not happy to live with an X800XTPE lol, I want to max out stalker, I cant upgrade the PSU, all I will be able to upgrade is the CPU/Mobo/Ram, I wont be able to afford any more, £400 will be the max tbh, £300 prefered...

Its really hard to think what to do.

That systems good enough to play games on very high detail at sub 1600x1200 resolutions, one and only things holding it back largely will be the 1gb ram. ;) My youngest bro's PC very similar to yours; recently stuck 2gb and made huge diff in almost every single game he plays. Will see you thorugh to the summer with extra memory and won’t cost much at all.

Edit: 1 PCI-E connector is not a problem, can get bolt on connectors iirc to double up from the 4 pins.

But the GPU is been bottlenecked really bad by the CPU, I dont think that your sons PC will be able to play Crysis or UT3 very good because of the CPU.

There is ram cheap, your just not looking hard enough. :) True he will have a problem with those two games, but why mention them when there not even going to hit stores till late Autum; said your upgrading whole PC in summer... Anyway Bro's (not my son  ) dual core is waiting in my office for PC when i get time to instal it. ;)

Woops sorry did not read it properly, I meant Bro :) .

Anyway, I will look for the upgrade part in the forums and post a thread in there about upgrade advice, I suspect £400 and I have decided on a CPU and GeIL PC6400 ram @ £93
