What should I get? £3k

Yeah, of course

Why? Who would actually want to buy a 90's Civic now?

I'll tell you who.

People who cant afford anything better in the case of the regular models, and people like yourself who really like Jap hatchbacks, VTEC, enjoy the handling, etc etc.

So like I said, Honda Enthusiasts or people on a lower budget.

Which bit of what I said was wrong?

An EG6/EK4 isn't good for anyone except Honda enthusiasts; nippy Hondas carry a ridiculous premium, even ****ed EK4s fetch £2k+

I suppose so, but only in the same way that Nobody really cares about 8 year old Focus's other than people who can't quite afford a Hyundai on the scrappage deal? They are mundane cars for people who don't care about what they drive. I suggest a car that fits the spec and budget just fine but is a couple of years older, something that can provide some thrills and pride in ownership but it gets canned because it's a 'Jap hatchback'.
I'm at risk of looking like a total fanboy now if I keep defending what was just a suggestion. I can see there's a quite strong anti-jap attitude on this forum so I might as well argue my point with a brick wall.

A focus is a much better car than a bottom of the range Hyundai whatsit - plus the interior is a million times better than anything Japanese from the 90s....

I dont think theres an anti-jap attitude here, but why would you have a 90s Civic when you could have a much newer Focus?

Focus is a 90's car too, lets not forget that, and the interior is just as 'bad'.

Well being pedantic its 2 years newer - but my point was that the money would buy a newer focus than it would a Civic.

As for the interior - thats a matter of preference, although I'd rather drive around in a car with no interior than anything that came out of Japan in the 90s - they really are aweful IMO. The Focus interior is a bit dated, but at least has a bit of style and some nicer materials

This is exactly the anti-jap attitude i'm talking about. In the real world there isn't anything to separate the mk1 Focus and EK Civic in terms of their interiors. Similar quality, equipment, materials etc.. but in the world of iaind it's automatically crap simply because its Japanese.

Erm what, since when?

Skylines - we like
200sx's - we like
CTR's - We like
NSX's - we like

etc etc.

You forget the major Teg love :D

Standard guy with a short commute should get a standard car like a mondeo/focus as already mentioned. Solid cars for a good price, that's about it really.

This guy is neither.
lol! :D

to be fair, this is a valid statement

@OP - Citroen Xsaras can be picked for peanuts, so you can spend well under your budget

Not meaning to take sides in this argument/discussion but ...
I suggested fiesta, fox suggested mondeo - both have decent interiors - the mk1 focus is a much older design to these and yes the interior is a bit shoddy but because its popular it has held its value much better.

Well no, not quite - if you notice, I was very careful about expressing my opinion as an opinion and not a statement of fact.

I say that because I havent seen any Japanese car interior from the 90s that I like. On the whole they aren't too bad, but it's the little touches that let them down for me - why do the indicator stalks and mirror buttons look like they've come straight from 1986? I've seen some devastatingly disgusting seat fabrics in them too. In my opinion, the Focus is a much nicer place to be.

Saying that doesnt make me anti-jap cars, it makes me anti-jap-car interiors. I'd still reccomend or even buy a jap car if it was the right balance - in fact I considered an Avensis when I was looking at my car but the newer shape were still a bit expensive and I didnt want the old shape.

I think you're being a bit defensive ;)

That's because the stalks come straight out of an early 90's Rover.

I find the EK interior to be very bland and dated looking, in comparison to the Focus.

I've driven both, yes, the EK is a bit more fun, but I felt like I was driving an old Hatchback. (The former point being less relevant for someone needing an AtoB car.)

The Focus felt more modern, and generally a nicer place to be.

If I needed a cheap daily driver, there is no car that is as effortless and pleasant to drive for the money than an older Focus, for what it costs.

Where am I suggesting a 2001 Focus?

It's an obscure hot hatch. He doesn't want a hot hatch so its chassis dynamics and VTEC engine will mean nothing to him, meaning he's just stuck with the rest of the car, a 10+ year old hatch. Great.
