Hi All,

im running out of space  , I only have seagate 80 gig + a IBM DS 40 gig and i think i should bite the bullet and get a 320 :D or somthing to tide me over till i build a new system. but which one should i get  my system only supports IDE but i do have an enclosures with a SATA connection.

which should i get, i know its a bit of a weird question but here is the way i have been looking at it, do u agree?

1) if i get a IDE 320gig i can replace the two drives in my current computer and put the others in my enclosure.

2)if i get a SATA i can use it with my new system but NOT as my primary HDD as i'd get 2 seagate 750's and raid them. so it would be another storage drive (waiting till vista to get a new system).

alternatively i could just use it in my enclosues with my new system.

i dunno what i should get, primerally i want the drive for storage and the odd backup. so far i recon i should go for a SATA what do you all think?

thx for all your help

Paulw :)

SATA is the prefered option these days, but if it is going in an enclosure you pretty much lose any of the benefits as you are slowed down by the USB connection.

Personally I would just get a large-ish IDE drive and wait until you have a system that can use SATA HDDs before spending money on a big SATA drive.

One thing I should point out is that apparantly Vista is being released in October [correct me if I am wrong guys!] so the real question is, can you not wait a few months?

odds are vista isn't until next year.

I made the jump from IDE to SATA with my new rig, and it seems a lot faster, whether or not thats the new pc (upgrade from skt A to C2D) or the HDDs themselves, but it does seem faster.
That and bigger capacity is always nicer.
