what size lightbulb is this?

Could also be a MR11 lamp, job to tell from pic, but both are 12v.

Depends on the diameter MR16 is 50mm of diameter and the MR11 is 35mm.
 
Im not meaning to hi-jack this guys thread but are there any advantage of using a MR11/16 over a GU10 bulb? is it just the lower voltage is safer for bathrooms?? I only ask because In my kitchen I have 4x GU10 and 2x MR16
 
Imo mr16 need drivers, so if you switch to led you can have issues with drivers and voltages. Gu10s provide no such issues and can be swapped to leds with no potential driver issues.

There may be benefits related to longevity if halogens, but i am unsure, there may also be benefits related to dimming, but again I am unsure.

You'll need transformers for the MR16's obviously as they are only 12v, in my experience of a lot of downlights MR16 is the better choice (even though I have majority GU10), the bulbs seem to last much longer to me (rarely ever had one fail) and the bulbs are also cheaper. The light seems nicer too somehow.
 
GX5.3 12v lamps have a thicker filament than the 230v GU10 ones, so they last longer as Jez has noticed. Also being on a transformer means they ramp up when turned on and ramp down when turned off, just due to how transformers work, which protects the filament even further.

If you want to save a bit of energy then look for IRC versions of the lamps, you can drop ~10w in power consumption per lamp and keep the same output.

Do you mean the diameter of the actual light bit.....if so its 50mm so much be MR16.

There is a lot of talk of transformers and drivers which I know nothing about. I am looking to replace the bulbs with some LED ones, can I just buy any or do I need to be careful?
 
It's then definitely a MR16 lamp, the LED version is a straight swap.
