I'm thinking 18mm thick.
Would that be thick enough if there was decent support?

Do what I'm doing... go buy a kitchen worktop? Comes in 2/3M lengths already finished for you... and usually 38mm thick and 600mm deep.
I'm getting mine from wickes in a few weeks, should be around £70. They have some nice wood look finishes too, rather than the stereotypical glossy kitchen style finish.
I think I would find 38mm too thick.
Worst how much girth do you have thread ever.
I kid
Why not fork out for a nice piece of wood? There's a build log in the cases category where a guy builds a desk around his PC. MDF sounds not to pleasant to use.
Depends on the length, width and weight on top, but with decent support the thickness doesn't matter too much as the frame will take the weight.
18mm will look pretty naff though. If you can afford it I'd recommend getting some real timber 40mm thick 'butchers block' kitchen worktop. Quite expensive but would look far better and take loads of weight. Its what I'm currently looking into using for mine.
Wear a mask if using mdf as it is really nasty stuff.
