Just got my 400D and i have no memory card.

Now they are cheaper and cheaper, so im after either a 2gb or 4gb card.

Does anyone know roughly how many shots you can take on RAW or JPEG with the 2gb or 4gb card?

Thanks.

4GB Sandisk Extreme III. I don't understand how the iso affects the number of pictures that can be stored but on anything less than 400 it's over 1000 as the displays sticks on 999 for quite a while in my 350D. Upping the iso brings it down to around 990+. That's on Large JPEG. RAW I'll check later as there are 212 photos on there already I nead to preserve before wiping it.

I might just get 4gb Sandisk too, then when on holiday i can snap without worrying about disk space.

A higher ISO means more noise. The more noise a picture has the less efficient the jpeg compression is as the picture essentially has more detail.

Ahhhhhh, so simple as that! Cheers xolotl.

You can expect about 444 on a 2GB card and 887 on a 4GB card (approx)

I'm using a 4Gb Sandisk Extreme III, it can hold, according to my 400d:

892 large JPEGs,
390 RAWs,

All in ISO 400.

Ok thanks boys and girls.

Another quick question, did you charge your battery just normally (untill the light went green) or did you leave it on for a long time (7 maybe 8 hours) ?

I havn't opened the manual yet as i have 30 days money back if i dont get on, but im sure i will, just need to get a memory card to play with it.

I usually charge mine overnight, so it's on for a while. But once the light is green it's finished charging, so it doesn't really matter.

Also worth noting, that the bigger your memory card the bigger your basket is (in terms of eggs).

I personally have 3 x 2gb cards, and an image dump. Even with with my 2gb cards I sometimes get scared in case I lose / break / corrupt it.

:)

What is an image dump ?

So you just change cards if you fill it up ? Is that just as risky seen as you have to keep installing and removing cards?

I might buy 2x2gb then if one fails, ill be able to carry on with the 2nd card, albeit losing data one the 1st card.

My camera only supports FAT16, so I'm limited to 2GB cards. As they're so cheap, I now have 4 of those and get around 350 RAW files on each. Took 1150 whilst on holiday recently.

That chart seems very approx, according to that my 5MP would get around 800 photos on my 2GB card where as I get closer to the figure stated for 4GB!

Am I doing something wrong? lol Or is that a 400D specific chart?

My 2Gb compact flash card was about £120 when I bought it, and before that a 512Mb that was £80ish...and only a couple of years ago. How prices have come down...

blimey....i only have 1 512mb XD card for mine at the moment! it'll hold 170 jpegs at top quality though, which probably won't be enough once i really get in the swing of things!

better put a 2gb xd card on the shopping list.
