What size SSD for Windows 8.1

120 to 250gb would be my choice, you can never have enough fast storage esp on a laptop

and prices are fairly cheap these days

crucial bx and mx range

I would go for 250GB SSD.

I have a Samsung ev0 850 as my OS drive and another for a games drive

once updates are installed and any programs etc I think 120GB would be too small

120GB absolute minimum, ideally 250GB. You'll get tight on space with a 120GB drive, you can pick up a 120GB drive for £50 so no reason to get anything less.

I'm going with a 128GB + 500GB SSD's, damn GTA V. :p

Is an SSD the same size as a laptop HDD? Or will I need a mount?

I believe they are slightly thinner, so theoretically you need a spacer, though the Dell Latitude I put an SSD into just slotted in no worries

I believe some crucial drives come with spacers, so that will be worth putting in

If it doesn't come with a spacer, fold some paper to squeeze into the gap - it's just to stop it rattling around anyway. The Sandisk extreme I recently bought had a spacer included.

I picked up a 120gb ssd and replaced the optical drive with a hard drive caddy. Ssd for os and apps and the hdd for the bigger things. I could just use the hdd in am external enclosure I guess but I've not used a cd drive in at least 2 years so not worth it for me. The optical drive caddy can be swapped incase I reeeeally need to read a disk.

If you don't have too many apps then 120gb will be fine -how much space are you currently using?

When I take into account my software and current 120gb ssd (which would be fine for just windows and basic programs) I wouldn't personally go below 240/250 range now, the prices are fairly cheap now. You get slightly better performance on these over 120 too.

When I upgrade I'll likely be going 512gb because the prices seem to be dropping at long last :)

The laptop I'm going to be putting the SSD in (low end cheap HP 255 G3) requires a lot of stripping down to get to the HDD. Why do they make it that way? Didn't laptops used to have one simple panel at the back which you can remove to get access to the HDD

I previously had Windows 7 installed on my 120GB Intel SSD. Fiddling around with files, I managed to move the user files (documents/pictures/music) to another hard drive, where I also installed all my programs. Even so, some stuff ended up saving on the SSD and it used up like 60GB. My new windows 8.1 tablet has the OS and programs (new tablet and I only have essentials) taking up 10GB on a 24GB eMMC. I'd recommend going for 120 to be on the safe side. Speaking of the devil, there's currently deals on them like a 120GB Samsung 840 for just £50 (seems to be out of stock though :c). Check out the deals/special offer section for the other options.

Depends. I've had laptops where you need to remove the motherboard to access the HDD and I've had others where you can remove/replace it by taking out a single screw.

on my laptop its just a black cover to remove with 1 screw which shows the memory and HDD.

4 screws to remove the HDD and another 4 to remove the HDD from the holder.

takes like ten mins to do

just googled the laptop and can see you have to do a load of screws from the bottom and then take out the keyboard and then remove the plastic cover under the keyboard to reveal the HDD.
