What Sledge hammer for knocking down external wall and breaking concrete slabs?

It very much depends what the wall is made of. For brick a small lump hammer and a 4" bolster will knock the individual bricks out. A bit more work but so much easier to clean up and more predictable than simply swinging the biggest hammer you can find at the wall.

I'd seriously consider some kind of power tool, either SDS drill or a electric or hydraulic breaker. Breaking concrete by hand is hard work.
If you're set on a sledge just go for a 10lb one but get a lump hammer and some bolsters as well.

That and a 110V transformer for 1 day and your over half way to owning an SDS drill.
Andi.

Would the SDS get the same job done as easy?

Getting the job done is more important than saving a few quid. Not like we are talking hundreds.

A transformer will only cost me just over a fiver for the weekend :D

I do need an SDS so will probably pick up the Titan anyway.

I took down a 100 brick pillar down in 10 minutes with a screwfix SDS drill. Much easier to deal with the mess and it went through mortar like a hot knife through butter. Plus a much more useful tool to have around than a sledgehammer.

Went for the medium breaker, soo glad I did.

Lots of low level concrete/brick work and this thing just destroys it, not sure if an SDS would have been "easier". Been able to stand up all the time, hardly any bending over other than to pick up the rubble.

Also, was 230v so no transformer needed :D

Not the best weather to be outside but hey ho.

More slabs removed today from the front of the house, near the bay window.

Glad I did, seems as though when they were originally laid, they were just put on top of whatever was there. Surely they should have dug down a little to make a bed for the slabs?
Some of the bricks at the same level of the slabs have just crumbled.

Needs some bricks replacing and pointing I think.

Having not used an SDS, I cannot say it would have been any worse/better but this breaker has made the weekend easier than a sledge hammer, that is for certain.

Also, surprising how much debris slabs can make.

I have much more than I expected.

Oh the pain.....

My body is aching all over.

Got a shed load of stuff escavated though so all in all, a good day :D

Next stop...

Need to get rid of it all.

Assuming you have a skip and you're just looking to get rid of the concrete rather than excavate big holes the a wheelbarrow will do! Unless of course it's a car park you're breaking up. :p a digger is a bit overkill.

I also have a load of earth to get rid of too.

Part of what I have been breaking up is an elevated rockery and a bricked up planting bed.

Shovelling will take a while I think.
